After using the T-Mobile Wi-fi hotspot for road trips, I feel like a more nuanced answer is appropriate to help determine whether this is a good purchase for people.

T-mobile claims to cover 96% of Americans. What they are saying is that their cell phone towers are concentrated in high population areas, which makes it kind of crappy for keeping the kids sated with Netflix on a long car ride.

Ref: http://www.ask.com/web?am=broad&q=t+mobile+coverage+map+usa&an=google_s&askid=7a1f1fff-8121-4490-b063-1c193f3b32f3-0-us_gsb&kv=sdb&gc=0&dqi=&qsrc=999&ad=semD&o=11083&l=dir&af=&_=1

Map of US coverage: https://maps.eng.t-mobile.com/pcc-customer.php

Check local coverage: http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage.html

In Ohio, it's not bad but odds are you're not in Ohio so you should reconcile how you want to use it versus whether coverage is sufficient to do this. The best use of this product is going to be in higher-population areas. Definitely not Montana (check the map if you disagree).

That said, our kids have wifi only tablets and this solution works well for us.

The cards are a little tricky, normally we buy a $35 card that gives is 3.5 GB for 60 days. Because we don't use the mobile hotspot too much, I think we leave data on the table every period - but it works well and for $17 / month it's not as expensive as buying a plan with a carrier. Note also that cellular data is much slower than broadband, so it's not all apples-to-apples.

My two cents are that this isn't for everyone, but can be a very economical way to have Internet access.

The wifi at my apartment complex is free, but is hit and miss at best. :/ Was working from home on my off day and couldn't connect. Went to the big blue box chain and searched some options. Was skeptical because I had zero experience with Tmobile. Am very glad I gave them a shot!

This was $79.96 plus tax with 5 GB of data. I un boxed, turned it on, and my tablet immediately found the signal. Very, Very easy setup!!!!! Also was easy to set up my pc's and printer. Signal strength is good in my area and speeds are very good as well. Battery life is actually better than expected.

You have the option of 3.5 GB for $35 or 5GB for $50 (good for 60 days.) That isn't the cheapest rate in the world, but is very competitive when you compare it to what AT&T was gonna charge me for tethering my phone and the extra data. (Plus I can connect multiple devices and have NO contract.) Plus I have a new local phone # for texting.

As with any data plan, you will burn through it streaming netflix, hulu, or watching YouTube.

IMO, this is a very viable option for people needing a connection on the go!

Been using mine now for over one year. Never had a problem in my area. If you have the coverage in your area, I would not hesitate to purchase and use this item. Small, compact and hold the charge a pretty long time. Would use / buy it again!

Checked the coverage map for this device and my area was covered but the device kept displaying a "searching" message regardless of where I was located. I returned it and will check into a Straight Talk device.

Get the 4G Huawei UMG587 GSM Mobile as it is better and slightly cheaper too:

Great Service!! I'm a T-Mobil customer with my smartphone and l purchased this "Hot Spot" on lightening deals last year for travel. Man o Man I'm glad that I did! I'm staying at a location in NJ where all the apartments have their private networks and the only way to get on-line is with your own internet service provider. T-Mobil hot spot has saved the day! I finally opened the box, found the sims card and with an assistance from T-Mobile, setup was very straightforward. I now have my HP Chromebook and Nokia smartphone up and running with fast and full internet service with no drop off's. Again, I'm glad that I brought this hot spot to NJ, from my home in FL. I would really be in a miserable way... without the hot spot from T-Mobile

I have been very happy with this wifi hot spot. I got it when I was facing a long wait to have internet service repaired at home. I connected 2-3 items at a time and got very decent speed. Now I use it for travel--in airports, on the road, etc.--and have had great luck with connectivity. I am still working on the free 5g of data. Curious to see how it is to deal with T Mobile on the no-contract thing, as other reviewers have had problems. The battery life is decent but the device heats up quite a bit. Hoping that does not lead to problems.

Works great especially when you have a family traveling with various communication devices such as iPads, iPhones & laptops. Everyone can use it and you have control on who accesses with a secured passcode. Highly recommend this as well as the T-Mobile network for the best data plans while traveling.
