Book Description

3 and upP and up
A little girl blames her contrary behavior on her best friend, Bear. It's Bear who throws sand in the playground. It's Bear who wants a big piece of cake, not a small one. And it's Bear who certainly does not want to be quiet during naptime. After an entire day of naughtiness, the little girl realizes that Bear has gone too far . . . and her attempts to make amends result in a grateful kiss from her beleaguered dad. But once Dad leaves the room . . .

A blissfully mischievous story sure to strike a chord with contrary bears, contrary bear owners, and contrary bear parents.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The toy who plays stand-in for a mischievous child is certainly not a new idea, but, infused with Cornell's and Root's (Ant Nancy and Old Man Trouble, reviewed below) knowing wit, it becomes fresh all over again. A girl and her stuffed bear "do everything together," she earnestly informs the reader, but, "Bear doesn't always do what he's supposed to do." Thus, it is Contrary Bear who throws sand, makes train whistle noises during naptime, demands a bigger piece of cake and, finally, floods the bathroom with splashes. Dad, the book's authority figure, handles Contrary Bear firmly and patiently ("This train will have to be quiet," he warns the naptime revelers), until, pushed to the brink by the bathroom incident, he banishes the soggy Contrary Bear to the clothesline. All is forgiven, however, when the toy's owner promises to make Contrary Bear "try harder to be good tomorrow." Root's deadpan (and dead-on) text gets just the right comedic fillip from Cornell (When I Was Little), who combines a cartoonist's satiric sensibility with the virtuosity of a master watercolorist. Contrary Bear seems every bit as alive as his human counterparts, often sporting a toothy grimace of unbridled?and very recognizable?childish fury. Adults and older children will also appreciate the puckish details, like the goofily named beauty products on the bathroom window sill. A guaranteed giggle for children and parents, with a title that's certain to become a catchphrase in any household with occasionally intractable offspring. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?A playful take on the ordinary but vexing problems of a parent/child relationship that echoes Helen Oxenbury's "Pippo" books (S & S), but takes the idea a step further. It's Contrary Bear who won't put on his shoes, read quietly at naptime, stop splashing during bathtime, etc., and poor dad must negotiate not only with his willful child, but with her bear as well. The first-person narration is clever, and Cornell's lively, watercolor-and-ink illustrations are a humorous counterpoint to the text, giving Contrary Bear as much personality as the story does. With her round-faced, button-eyed look, the narrator is portrayed with humor and energy. As Root demonstrated in The Old Red Rocking Chair (Arcade, 1992), she can take a seemingly ordinary theme and give it a new twist. Here, she tells an all-too-familiar story with humor and flair.?Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library, NY

I love this book. It's a lot of fun to read out loud and the characters, especially the naughty bear, are very expressive and exuberant.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bear Did It!, June 24, 2009
This review is from: Contrary Bear (Hardcover)
Contrary Bear
A little girl's best friend is her stuffed bear, or as her dad calls him, Contrary Bear. Contrary Bear doesn't want to wear shoes to go outside, throws sand at playmates, won't be quiet at naptime, and much more. But after being naughty all day and getting dad very mad, it looks like Contrary Bear may have gone too far this time.

The poor dad in this book is stuck having to practice good parenting with a little girl who is behaving very badly (and blaming it on Contrary Bear as well). The beauty of this book is that the dad is shown applying proper discipline, but also getting frustrated and angry just as all real parents do (the drawings of him freaking out are priceless and will be instantly recognizable to any caregiver). In the end, all is well between the girl and her father with the promise that Contrary Bear will try harder to be good tomorrow.

If you and your child have been fighting lately or if you've recently had to endure a rash of bad behavior, this is a good book to share together to shed some humor on the situation. It also sends the very important message that fathers love their children even when we need to discipline them (or their bears).

We took this book out of our public library and it reminded us so much of our son that we had to get a copy. Its hard to find now that it is out of print. The antics and personality of the little girl (and her bear) are so true of so many little kids.
