Editorial Reviews

2013 debut album from the British singer/songwriter. Contrast is a genre-defying blend of innovative R&B, dramatic hip-hop soundscapes, and stadium-scaling pop anthems that manages to be both credibly cool and commercially appealing. The album features collaborations with Ne-Yo, Stargate, Midi Mafia, Frank Ocean, Kevin Rudolf, Sandy Vee, Crada, songwriter Diane Warren, The Invisible Men, and Pharrell Williams.

This disc is everything that Justin Bieber's new Believe is not: it's fresh,; it's colorful, energetic, and most of all it's not boring. Perhaps the weakest songs on the disc are the single Can't Say No and the following song with Pharrell, Lift Off.

My first impression of Maynard was the similarities I found between him and Michael Jackson--and this was before I read that MJ was one of his heroes. His voice is distinctive enough though you can hear the guys that he has listened to. He's learned from some of the greatest and the best parts of those vocalists are what Conor Maynard brings to your stereo. And the music has so many influences that it may seem like his is an amalgamation of everybody else. But that's NOT a negative. After all, Reese's struck gold when they combined peanut butter with chocolate! This combination of colors keeps this disc from being one dimensional and stale. And the opposite of being unoriginal--since we all are a product of our own unique influences--this blend of shades and shapes makes his art one worth going back to time and again.

It would be hard to mention which are the best tracks since there really isn't anything bad on the disc. A casual pass--if that would happen with this collection--might present the outstanding Animal, Vegas Girl, Mary Go Round, and Take Off with the appropriate closing with Just In Case.

But the real contrast here is that, while it borrows from all the greats of this genre, it doesn't try to be a part of the pack. the radio is full of cookie-cutter fashion and no originality. Most of those are disposable and will give way to the next legion of cookie-cutter heroes waiting to take their place. Maynard, on the other hand, will not be a part of that if this disc is any indication where he's headed.

I can understand why Neo jumped at the chance to work with this guy. Conor Maynard is the real deal. He's a great singer, and he has a great debut album on his hands. From start to finish, all of the contrasting tracks move rhythmically, vocally, and lyrically. I can't "Animal" or "Pictures" out of my head.

This album shows great originality on Conor's behalf and alot of the tracks are catchy and are easy to like. He really is an original artist. I feel as if nobody could have done these songs but him. Good album. Worth buying.

He's the US version of Justin Bieber, but I dare say a bit more talented! Its a surprisingly good album for a young songwriter.

This cd is the best! If people try to compare Conor to Justin Bieber or anyone else, they are wrong. I love Justin Bieber, I even went to his concert, but he is in no comparison to Conor Maynard. Conor has a better voice and his cd is way better than Justin's.

Contast has maybe two song that I don't really listen to, but all the others I have on repeat.

I love this cd, and can't get enough.

For those who are quick to compare 20-year old British pop singer Conor Maynard to Justin Bieber, Maynard is quick to dispel that myth, as he rightfully should. 2013's Contrast is not synonymous to Justin Bieber's Believe ultimately. Where Justin Bieber talks about eating fondue and being a girl's 'Buzz Lightyear' on song "Boyfriend", Conor Maynard takes much more leeway, opting for more suggestive fare than Bieber could 'get away with'. Lines like "Girl tear me apart, like an Animal" or "Make her ride it, ride it, Rollercoaster" are far more liberal than what the 15-year old Bieber could have done on 2009's My World. CONTRAST is not perfect, Justin Timberlake 'adorations' or not, but it is a solid pop album to open up 2013.

"Animal" feels 'dirty' from the first note. Sporting hip-hop oriented pop production (synths, drum programming), the cut is sinful. Maynard's vocals are breathy and focused in his lower register on the verses. He rises to the occasion on the refrain singing "You can take, my heart, like a criminal / won't you make, me believe, I'm the only one / So grab me by the neck and don't you ever let go / mess me up, so good, until I'm begging for more / Girl tear me apart, like an animal..." Suggestive and semi-rebellious, "Animal" kickstarts CONTRAST soundly.

Ne-Yo, Conor's mentor guests on the dance-pop "Turn Around".

Artist for years have come in waves from all over the globe and 2012 was a year for the UK.

I came across Conor by accident when looking for a Rihanna song and found his version of "Love the Way You Lie" on Youtube. Not only was I impressed with his vocals, but how well produced his version was, so I was hooked and had to hear more, and more I heard and the more I was impressed.

Now that Conor is established with a label and touring, he is a must see. Just listen to this album and you will hear not only his originality, but the influences that made Conor the artist he is. Songs like Animal, Lift Off, and Glass girl you can hear Micheal Jackson. Songs like Mary Go Round and Better than you, you can hear *Nsync. Then the songs Vegas Girl, Pictures, and Drowning is all Conor.

I wish he had more airplay in the states, but for those of you curious, you will not be disappointed. This album is fun, fresh and leave you wanting more fom Conor.
