4.0 out of 5 stars Sublime and - not so sublime October 17, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Back in '69, when we were teenagers, my brother bought this, on the advice of the geek behind the counter of a hole-in-the-corner music shop. In the following thirty years I've never seen it anywhere else, until now. What you all missed was a Side One with six thundering pop-rock tracks from four talented multi-instrumentalists. Okay, the lyrics are often trite, but the rhythm section and melodies have kept me playing it ever since my brother handed it over in '72. "Mother Earth", with soaring keyboards, echoing drum crashes, and pounding bass, is in my list of Top Fifty songs of all time. "No Sleep Blues" (Incredible String Band song)bops along on many an ICE selection, as does "Spinning Wheel" (no relation to BS&T track). "Ride with Captain Max" is a fast-paced non-nonsene mindless boogie number to please any air-drummer/bass guitarist. Oh, the reason it's called "Contrasts" is that for Side Two, the group decided to dabble in the harpsichord, acoustic guitar world of Middle Earth / pre-electric T.Rex - and turned off the electricity. Every ten years I play Side Two and then remember why I don't bother. However, Side One alone is worth four stars.
