5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful duets, April 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Contrasts (Audio CD)
Father and son Pizzarelli turn out a another CD of beautiful duets, with each perfectly in tune with the other. It is mostly swing styled, but there is a nice variety of sounds. Standout tracks include Three Little Words, The Minute Samba and the Jersey Bounce, but all the tunes are wonderful. I think that this is the best disk they have made together and that is very high praise indeed.

If you mention guitar, most people think of a strangely-shaped block of wood attached to a chain of effects processors, blasting away at unsafe sound levels. But a guitar can also be a musical instrument, with an intimate and woody sound. You're welcome to the former; I'll take the latter.

This collection combines some nice solo work along with impressive duets from the redoubtable Pizzarellis. The arrangements are comfortable and sound as if they've been worked on for years. More than anything, it feels like what Sunday afternoons must have been at the Pizzarelli house. Both father and son are capable of laying down a solid bass line (7-string guitars don't hurt) while simultaneously playing propulsive rhythm. Solo work is passed generously back and forth.

This is not music of exploration. You won't get the dark musings of Jim Hall or the out-of-the way journeys of Bill Frisell. You can't even SEE the edge from here. The music harkens back to the Hot Club of Paris, with tones of Django, Les Paul and other early greats. It's played with love--not reverence--and is filled with energy and life. Your foot will tap and your mood with brighten with this CD in the player.
