Not the same old same old, December 9, 2001
This review is from: Contrasts (Audio CD)
Bill Charlap just might get his just desserts sometime soon. His piano playing is flawless, seeking and finding new territory for old standards. Accompanied by Jon Gordon, a young lion on the alto sax, Charlap re-claims some of these chestnuts for himself. And Gordon does not take a back seat. Phil Woods calls him "one of the best ever." High praise indeed. And, if this outing is indicative, Gordon deserves the praise. The two play off each other, challenge each other in a subtle but effective way.
This jazz--new or old--at its best.

Jon & Bill, wheww!! Bill Charlap most innovative short of genius that ever touched weighted keys, Jon, a musical wolf wrapped in the bread of meekness. These heavenly sounds that we hear between Jon and bill are a continuation of what I heard from 1980-1984 at H.S. Performing Arts where both graciously and now continue to create music just like water flows over and around fresh creeks in mountains. All I can say is smooth, smooth, smooth.
