Review

In all of Daumal's writing, the world of concrete objects carries its full common sense of pleasure and hardship, of beauty and blight. At the same time, his philosophical turn of mind involves him in a real struggle of ideas...His is a startlingly clear voice in the din' - Roger Shattuck --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This is one of the most original, scary and darkly magical books of metaphysical poems that will make the reader spin into a long vertigo. The title is simply untranslatable and strangely amusing (what is it: "Counter-heaven", "The anti-sky", "The heaven-below", "The sky-against", "The heaven-under", or maybe "Heaven's hell"?). It sounds like a name cut out of Milton's "Paradise Lost" or "The Divine Comedy" by Dante. The whole book is epic, lyrical and visionary in style for what's so real and truly a promise not to forget who we are & where are we definitely going towards... It really doesn't matter that Mr. Kelton W. Knight left the title in the French original. But it's so sad to see this new edition done without caring to revise and fix some simple misprints found in the first English edition of this beautiful book. Maybe the whole book should have been left as done by the poet when first published in 1935 (after winning the Jacques Doucet prize of poetry): no mistakes and just all in French!

The book is divided in 6 sections of poems:
I. KEYS TO A GREAT POETIC GAME
II. DEATH AND HER MAN
III. THE SKY IS CONVEX
IV. BLOOD CLOTS
V. ENEMY OF THE DAY
VI. THE SILENCE OF THUNDER

This is his only book of poems, the source and revelation to Rene Daumal's life & thought.
