¿Suicidio o asesinato? Un hombre que se hace llamar "Inductor" confiesa haber cometido catorce crímenes perfectos haciendo que todos parecieran suicidios. Inductor tiene información demasiado específica sobre las escenas del crimen como para ser un farol, pero la pregunta sigue en pie: ¿cómo lo hizo? La agente especial del FBI Schully cree que el hombre es un egomaníaco y un mentiroso. Su compañero, Mulder, tiene una explicación diferente. Cree que Inductor es un extraño asesino homicida que utiliza un control mental tan poderoso que puede convencer a sus víctimas par que se maten. Pero al no haber la más mínima prueba, Mulder sólo tiene una forma de demostrar su teoría. Tiene que enfrentarse diectamente a Inductor.
