100% Pure Reading Pleasure, July 27, 2011
This review is from: Out of Control (The Kincaid Brides) (Paperback)
I had mixed emotions about Mary Connealy's newest title "Out of Control"...I couldn't read it fast enough, but then again, I couldn't read it slow enough. I didn't want to put the book down to go to work, I wanted to read "just one more chapter". But I definitely wasn't ready for the book to end. I have been a fan of anything Mary Connealy writes since I first picked up Petticoat Ranch. Her books make me laugh out loud and keep me on the edge of my seat at the same time. She's accomplished that again with her newest title. As the story opens, Julia has been stuck in a cave for hours, trapped in total darkness. Rafe Kincaid, who has promised himself never to re-enter the cave, has to in order to rescue Julia. And in fine Connealy style, these two strong-willed characters immediately clash. What follows is pure bedlam, chaos, mayhem and 100%, pure reading pleasure! The cave, which intrigues geology-student Julia but is the family curse of the Kincaids, becomes the center-point of the book. It holds fascinating mysteries for Julia and haunting terrors for Rafe. There are caverns to be explored and secrets to be uncovered. But beware, some secrets have the potential to be deadly. If you've enjoyed Mary Connealy's books before, you don't want to miss this one. If you've never tried Mary Connealy...what are you waiting for?

Dangerous, fun and delicious!, September 3, 2011
This review is from: Out of Control (The Kincaid Brides) (Paperback)
Mary Connealy is possibly one of the best Christian Western Fiction writers there is! My first Christian Western I ever read was written by Mary Connealy and I've yet to find another Western author that I enjoy more than her! Her description of detail just pulls you in to the story and her characters are always fun and enjoyable!! I have to admit though that I struggled with whether to give Out of Control 4 or 5 stars because I didn't quite connect with the characters as much as in some of her previous stories but over all this book was amazing besides my minor issues with Julia so I decided on 5. The reason I struggled with liking Julia is because of weird obsession with fossils and her selfish behavior regarding them. Rafe was also a bit weird too, the whole marriage conversation that they had was strange. His haunting childhood story though was spot-on good and had me feeling the pain and emotions along with him which drew me in to his story. My issues with Rafe and Julia were very minor though and I still ended up loving them and their stories. I especially enjoyed all the other characters involved too, especially Julia's step-mother and Rafe's brother Ethan. One of my favorite things about this book was the added mystery and suspense involved with the caves, some of it was downright creepy and I had hurry to read to make sure everyone would be ok! Oh and the ending is the best!! The spiritual aspect of this book I thought was more enlightening than any of her other books. Both the hero and heroine are dealing with trying to please their worldly fathers instead of their heavenly fathers and their struggles with finding God in the midst of heartache was profound. I enjoyed watching these characters grow and I'm excited to see how the story continues in book 2. If you haven't read any of Connealy's books it is about time to start, she just has a way with Christians Westerns unlike any other author. Thank you to Bethany House for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own, I would not recommend this book if I didn't LOVE it!!

Nice start to a new series, August 3, 2011
This review is from: Out of Control (The Kincaid Brides) (Paperback)
Mary Connealy may have switched publishers, but I'm happy she took her trademark sense of humor with her. As usual, she manages to balance snort worthy moments with heart stopping action to craft a highly engaging novel. Stepping foot in the dark caverns near his ranch makes Rafe feel out of control, but Julia can't resist exploring them, even if it means risking her life. That's the kind of premise that ensures terror in the caves coming right up! On a recent field trip with my son, I experienced the suffocating fear of being in a pitch black cavern so I could appreciate what the characters were going through. (In my case, the darkness only lasted a minute-long enough for a spider to crawl up my arm and induce cardiac arrest- but I digress). There were about thirty pages in the second half of this book where I felt the plot meandered a bit and the action slowed down. But it picked up again toward the end for a strong finish.
