Two FBI agents travel to the Navajo Reservation to assist in finding/stopping a particularly nasty serial killer, with the unplanned assistance of a local psychic. All three are carrying historical baggage, which is tantalizingly revealed, and meshes well with the plot as it develops. This crime novel is very well researched and successfully introduces a great deal of true investigative technique without losing the layperson reader. The characters are compelling, though not as fully developed as I would have liked (maybe in the next book?); this is more an action-oriented book, with the story line progressing rapidly and with some great twists and turns along the way. The author has a gift for finding the right balance between dialogue and exposition, and the pages fly by. The book is not particularly gore-filled but there are some disturbing scenarios described (nothing worse than what you could find on TV, though). I should also mention that the Navajo Reservation and the Navajo culture plays substantially into the story, which turns out to be a perfect setting in which to couch a story like this. All in all, a great read, and a good solid addition to the crime fiction genre. Highly recommended!

I had read a book that I *just* could not put down. As a matter a fact, some recent books from "big name" authors I ended up not even finishing. Which is something I've never done before. Then I read "Control". And read it in 24 hours with any of my free time. Wow! What an amazing story teller Tanya Tienne is. The story begins with the murder of several young girls near an Indian reservation in the Southwest. FBI agents are dispatched from Virginia to assist local law encforcement with the case, along with a reluctant-to-be-drawn-in woman who has unexplained psychic abilities. There is action, drama, clever dialoge, and a fresh mysery set in an exotic local. (I detest spoilers, so I do not give detailed reviews.) Ms. Tienne delivers a fast paced, well told story. I didn't feel one word was wasted in propelling the action forward. The characters are real, three dimensional beings. And even the female protatonist's psychic abiities are not shown in an over the top manner. The conflict and solution are also well delivered and the author kept me guessing about a mystery within a mystery until the last pages. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers and mysteries and will look for new work from the author in the future. |
