5.0 out of 5 stars Year's best soundtrack
This 17 track soundtrack to Anton Corbijin's Biopic of Ian Curtis and Joy Division is truly a must have for fans of the band or for fans of the "Post Punk" era. The incidental New Order music makes this a must own for NO completists, and the tracks from the movie that can be drawn as Joy Division's biggest influences (Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk) are great in the mix, even if I happen to own it all already. Chances are if you were a big fan of Joy Division, enough to see the movie, you would be familiar with all the contents of this collection. The cast version of "Transmission" is great; the actors performing the songs are what made
this movie much more fluid and realistic.

Two complaints though:
-The Killers cover of "Shadowplay", while not only pretty underwhelming, is out of place here and should have either been saved for a rumoured covers album (which would be... just bad) or just kept out of the thing entirely. I kind of shuddered when it played over the credits of the movie.
-Not including the cast version of "Isolation", where we see Sam Riley in a recording booth convincingly laying down this Closer track was a great sequence, nipping at the heels of "Transmission". It's a shame it's not on here.

Having a Joy Division greatest hits package would be a great way to get people into the band after seeing the movie, but that is a whole other discussion.

This 17 track soundtrack to Anton Corbijin's Biopic of Ian Curtis and Joy Division is truly a must have for fans of the band or for fans of the "Post Punk" era. The soundtrack is like a mix-tape of classic Joy Division tracks along with songs by New Order, The Buzzcocks, Iggy pop, David Bowie, Kraftwerk, and the Velvet Underground. The members of New Order overlooked the production of the the soundtrack and even contributed to the the score, it seems to have been a labor of love for Ian's old band mates and I think that makes this a very unique and special soundtrack to have. My only complaint is The Killer's cover of "Shadowplay". Nothing against The Killer's, I think they're a good band but their cover just seemed flat and uninspired. Just can't beat the original I guess. The track listing is as follows.

1) Exit-New Order
2)What Goes on-The Velvet Underground
3)Shadowplay -The Killers
4)Boredom-Buzzcocks
5)Dead Souls-Joy Division
6)She Was Naked-Supersister
7)Sister Midnight-Iggy pop
8)Love will tear us apart-Joy Division
9)Hypnosis-New Order
10)Drive in Saturday-David Bowie
11)Evidently Chickentown- John Cooper Clark
12)2HB-Roxy Music
13)Transmission-Joy Division
14)Autobahn-Kraftwerk
15)Atmosphere-Joy Division
16)Warszawa-David Bowie
17)Get Out-New Order

Wonderful Soundtrack. One of the best in a long time. Pick it up!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some wonder, some disappointment, January 7, 2008

One thing that really floored me watching this film was how all of the tracks sounded completely 'new'- as if unheard before. Maybe they'd gotten New Order to do them with the actor doing the lead vocals??

I looked around for the soundtrack and realized, finally, that no- these weren't weird outtakes or something, this was actually the cast performing the track. We do get one track of the cast performing, and we get the New Order incidental music. Otherwise, this replicates something like a dozen tracks that I already own. If I didn't already own them, though, this album would be hugely recommended.
So- 3 stars. And press the rest of the cast versions already, sheesh!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great companion to an incredible movie, December 31, 2007
This review is from: Control (Audio CD)
I saw the movie "Control" last night. Then immediately went to a record store to buy the CD. And as I was in line, an employee saw the CD and said 'great movie, great cd'. Agreed! The movie completely blew me away and after watching the credits go by and seeing all the great music, I knew I had to get it. This isn't meant to be a 'compliation' CD of rare tracks.. its meant to be a soundtrack to the movie. And that is exactly what it is. Not only does it include Joy Division songs, but their influences-- which were featured in the movie: David Bowie, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop. And it was a nice touch to see their contemporaries, The Buzzcocks, featured as well. Especially since they're mentioned so much in the movie. And I like the added touch of including New Order tracks and a new cover by The Killers (which played during the end credits). It would've been nice to have a few more songs, some more influences.. maybe some Sex Pistols, and another Joy Division song or two. But at 17 tracks, its not exactly 'lightweight'. - And I also like the added touch of movie dialogue in between the tracks.
Overall, a great CD. I haven't stopped listening to it all day.
And if you have the opportunity-- go see the movie!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars If you're buying this for the new New Order songs..., March 18, 2008
By

If you're thinking about buying this cd for the new New Order songs then you may be interested in knowing that the 3 songs put together are about 5 minutes of incidental background music. Track 1 "Exit" is a little over 1 min, Track 9 "Hypnosis" is also a little over 1 min, and track 17 "Get Out" is about 2 1/2 mins (although their running times on the cd are longer as there is dialog from the movie at the beginnings of them). This hardly makes owning the cd worthwhile to me - even being the huge fan of New Order/Joy Division that I am. It would have been nice if New Order had recorded at least one full-length song that could be taken away from the movie as a stand-alone track, rather than just doing a few minutes of snippets to be used as incidental background music. These are songs that to me will never need to be listened to again except in the context of the movie and in those times I will be watching the movie - so having this cd is pointless. The other songs are nice, although as other reviewers have pointed out most fans of this movie will most likely already have most of the other songs on here. The 11 min edit of Autobahn was new to me, having heard only the original 22 min version all these years - and that was interesting - but the new New Order stuff to me was quite a disappointment. By the way... see the movie - it's excellent!

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot missing..., October 13, 2010

I was looking to buy this but there are too many great songs from the film missing: Leaders of Men (when Joy Division was still "Warsaw"), She's Lost Control, Candidate, Disorder, and Isolation. Think I'll have to skip this one...

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been more of the cast versions, October 4, 2010
This review is from: Control (Audio CD)
As it was the cast performing the music of Joy Division that made the film what it was, rather than the little snippets of stuff by other artists, the bulk of this soundtrack should have been devoted to those performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent..., March 25, 2010

I've loved Joy Division since I first heard them about 28 very odd years ago. I can be pretty picky when it comes to covers of any song. I was SO impressed with the cast's version of "Transmission" and "Isolation." Truly amazed, astounded, seriously, Hello Sam Riley!!! WOW! How ever did they find him to match Ian Curtis? On that note, while I really would have liked the cast version of "Isolation" included on this soundtrack, I will have to be content with only "Transmission." It's a shame because they did such a great job. The original Joy Division tracks sound better somehow, enhanced (by my love for them I'm sure.) The other tracks by New Order, Bowie, Iggy, Buzzcocks, excellent of course. I could have done without the incidental sound snippets and had more songs.
If you haven't seen the movie, please do.
Bless Ian Curtis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definately worth a listen, December 25, 2007

This is a perfect companion to any one seeing the movie. Reviews I have read wished it would have included more songs from the lead actor, and I might have been able to do with out clips from the movie....but none the less a good cd for any Joy Division collection
