The best self managed approach to coping with IBS symptoms that I have ever read,
By Jeffrey D. Roberts "Founder, Irritable Bowel ... (Toronto, ON CANADA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Controlling IBS the Drug-Free Way: A 10-Step Plan for Symptom Relief (Paperback)
Written by an expert who has taken 20 years of IBS treatment research and condensed it into a book, Dr. Jeffrey Lackner has written a very different type of book for IBS sufferers. The core of the book is a 10-step plan for symptom relief; however, Dr. Lackner's approach is not ordinary. He combines proven techniques for you to develop an understanding of who you are and how your thoughts and behavior attribute to your well being. This isn't a book about psychology and IBS. Dr. Lackner skillfully takes the reader through an understanding of how the digestive system works, how you may be diagnosed with a digestive disease, and then how the physical torture of daily IBS symptoms can be coped with by changes in how you think and act. For over 25 years I have fostered a self-help/control approach for individuals and this is the first book in a long time that provides the ingredients to do just that. I highly recommend this book for every IBS sufferer.

I really loved this book. It taught me how my thinking and reactions to situations can really affect my IBS. After trying the suggestions in this book for a few weeks I was amazed to actually see results. I feel I now have a completely new and effective approach to dealing with the symptoms of IBS. - Granted, I still need to avoid the foods that exacerbate the problem, but stress induced episodes are now practically nil. I recommend this book to anyone who suffers with this painful and frustrating condition.

This book is the bomb. Drugs don't work on me. Nothing compares to the treatment offered here. I am cured. My bowel is currently very relaxed and pleasant.

This book was recommended to me by my doctor, at the UCLA Medical Center. I have found it to be easily understandable, informative and very helpful in trying to control my severe IBS with Crohn's-like symptoms. I am unable to take many of the prescribe drugs, due to my body's severe reaction to them; by following the 10 steps, this book has helped me to reduce many of my symptoms, without the side effects of drugs!

Having lived with IBS since I was a child I am always on the lookout for help. But I found this author to be condescending and to err heavily on this side of turning IBS into a psychological condition rather than a medical condition, even relating IBS to early childhood abuse. I write for the medical community and expected to find if not medical advice (we all know there is no silver bullet to cure or control IBS) at least practical ideas. It offered neither.
