What are Conversation Strategies? They are techniques that help the speaker and listener keep a conversation going to its natural and desired conclusion. They are skills that supplement the linguistic and sociolinguistic skills most texts focus on: grammar, vocabulary, and usage. To develop strategic competence, students must learn the words, phrases, and conventions used as two speakers engage in the active give-and-take of conversation. These are the strategies we use to get more information, make comparisons, correct someone politely, agree and disagree, summarize, share information, and make decisions in a business meeting. Students also practice polite forms, rejoinders, clarifications, follow-up questions, getting a response, expressing probability, interrupting, and avoiding conversation killers. Each activity has three parts: a teacher's introduction, a written introductory exercise to be done by students individually, and pair/group practice that makes us!e of information gap and other interactive formats. Each fun, student-centered activity begins with controlled language and moves to open, imaginative exchanges. The work is enjoyable for students and teacher. Easy to use in any intermediate level class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten Topics when Teaching English Conversation, August 10, 2006
By
Christine P (Shanghai, China) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Conversation Strategies: Pair and Group Activities for Developing Communicative Competence (Paperback)
This book is great for tutoring or teaching English to intermediate or advanced learners of English. It covers topics that you forget, like how to agree or disagree with an opinion someone has suggested.

It is funny as a native speaker to read these topics and realize I use these words and phrases everyday, but I would never before think to teach them to students learning to speak English. The book also gives ideas, activities, and worksheets for teaching and learning the topics.

It's a little known book, but an awesome resource for ESL/EFL teachers. Especially when they want you to teach "conversation." I know it feels daunting, but this book will help tremendously! Also, this book is great for corners, when you sit around and just speak English: you can focus on certain topics.

Great resource!

5.0 out of 5 stars No ESL teacher should be without this book, July 31, 2006

Along with every teacher at my school, I have used this book for both private tutoring and group instruction. It's laid out well, and simplified without being oversimplified. It also works as a good backup if you have a new class that is just not talking.

If I had to choose one discourse based textbook for a beginner to low-intermediate ESL conversation class, this would be the one. If I needed one for a larger, more advanced intermediate class, I would choose Discussion Strategies, by the same authors. I don't know why I don't see these books used more often. They're AWESOME!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic ESL book for beginner/elementary/low int. conversation, April 6, 2008
This review is from: Conversation Strategies: Pair and Group Activities for Developing Communicative Competence (Paperback)
Fantastic resource for functions of conversation. Great as a supplement to a class that meets all week, or as a stand alone text for a once or twice-a week class. Each lesson goes for approximately 2 one hour classes, give or take depending on the class level and the chapter. It fills a great gap for conversation texts at this level.
