After seeing this HistoryMakers interview on my local PBS station, I will be recommending that my area's public and university libraries purchase it for their collections.

I've heard Dr. Gates interviewed on several public radio programs, but today I learned that he grew up in West Virginia and he was the first black to receive a Ph.D. from Cambridge University in Great Britain.

Dr. Gates described how he negotiated some difficult educational and career transitions. I think the examples and stories he shared from his own life would be valuable for anyone from their teens through their twenties (perhaps even older) as they make life choices and career decisions. I'd like to share some of his advice with some university faculty I dealt with during my graduate degrees -- particularly Dr. Gates' words on how he supports and encourages his graduate students.

He also told the story of being arrested at his own home and the White House Beer Summit that followed that event.

The PBS website has a section devoted to this program -- just do a web search for PBS + the title of this program.

I believe I have all the DVDs of Dr. Gates, a Harvard professor. His specialty is tracing the roots of black and other Americans using public records and DNA analysis. Any subject he tackles is of interest.
On this DVD he is interviewed by CNN White House Correspondent Suzanne Malveaux for 60 minutes, who traces his roots in West Virginia. It is a humorous interview well worth watching. He confesses that he did not know who his ancestors were and that he is 56% white, which is always a surprise for the blacks he interviews. Many claim Indian blood but few find it.

a wonderful interview with an endearing gentleman, this was a must add to my
ever expanding collection of genealogical related dvds (they're mounting up), i
find Henry Louis Gates Jr to not only be an intelligent subject but also very
diplomatic with his research.
