3.0 out of 5 stars Only for Egyptian Arabic
The book is good if you want to learn Egyptian Arabic. However, after trying out some of the phrases with Arab friends from other countries, I was told that many of these words are very local to Egypt and qualify as 'slang'. For instance the word for car in the book is Arabiya, whereas the more commonly used word is Sayyara. Several such differences can be found...

This book and 2 cassettes provides a good foundation in Egyptian Arabic. The instruction walks you through several tourist related instructions like how ask for time or order fig jam for breakfast. The cassettes put you in mock conversations and are a joy to use.

Egyptian arabic is the standard dialect as most film and radio uses it, so if you wind up somewhere else in arabia, you will still be well understood. Some letters are pronouced differently in Egypt (eg: the J is a G) and some times other words are used entierly (eg: the word for coffee and bread). Just don't be suprised if a non-Egyptian corrects you.

Overall this is the best short intro to Arabic I've found.

My objective is to learn how to communicate with my Egyptian family. This means a clear and concise pronunciation and phoenetic vocabulary. This little handbook is full of dialogue and goodies with which to start you off with a little of confidence. I would like to have a more advanced version of the same thing. I'm not looking to learn in seven days as the title suggests, but it is perfectly possible to do so. Thankyou Samy! Shokran!

This is a great introduction for the Arabic language. The Egyptian language is THE most understood all over the Arab world, because of the media production (Egyptian films , series..etc) . The tapes are informative, and the phrases will get you talk the language people speak , and not a language dug down from old poet ! The fastest way to communicate !I recommend also Eurotalk Talk now Arabic SW

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Audio But Meaningless Phrases Translation, September 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Conversational Arabic in 7 Days (Audio Cassette)
Beginners would find this egyptian dialect helpful. But only for the audio part. What's lacking is the book translation of phrases. Those already very familiar with arabic script would find the phrases difficult to figure out because they are written using the roman or english alphabets. Letters in arabic are absolutely different in sounds than english. The author would have realized it. Its meaningless without the arabic script.
