Editorial Reviews

Review

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed."-- AudioFile Magazine

"EXTREMELY ACCESSIBLE...each section within the lessons is short enough to hold our attention, and there is enough repetition to teach even those who consider themselves slow learners...Pimsleur [programs] are extremely thorough and easy to use -- quite lively!"-- Boston Herald

"Learn French while commuting, German while jogging, Spanish (or Russian, Italian, and Japanese) while cooking all with NO WRITTEN MATERIALS!"-- New York Daily News

"Designed for the ear and not the eye...the lessons provide PERFECT 30-minute bites of work."-- St Louis Post-Dispatch

Product Description

This Conversational program contains 8 hours of interactive audio-only instruction, effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions.

HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT®

What is the Pimsleur® difference?

The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Japanese structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Japanese can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.

The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only these pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.

When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.

With Pimsleur you get:

  • Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,
  • Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,
  • The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,
  • 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.

Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills.

Conversational Japanese includes the 10 lessons from Pimsleur's Basic Japanese plus an additional 6 lessons.

The 16 lessons in Conversational Japanese are the same first 16 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Japanese Level 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars HAPPY READER TRUE REVIEW, March 9, 2007
By THE HAPPY READER "TRUE REVIEW" (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA) - See all my reviews
This program will not make you a fluent speaker of Japanese; but usage of all three comprehensive Japanese courses probably would. What this particular program will do, it will certainly give a basic tourist level knowledge of Japanese. The narator will give you some tips on grammer so that you can put together sentences from the various words and phrases you learn on the program. Also it will teach you proper pronounciation of the words - which will help you to sound more native.

Keep in mind that this review is only refering to the Pimsleur Conversational Japanese course which is only half as much as that found in the Comprehensive. Also if you get this program to start then move on to the Comprehensive package Pimsleur will reduce the price of the package, I forget by how much, but I remember it was a good deal compared to what others are selling it for.

Let's put my thoughts on the program this way, if you want to learn to speak Japanese on your own this will really do the job as long as you stick to it. I would recommend doing each section twice before moving on to the next. But it really does work. I don't regret spending a penny on this program.

I honestly can't think of any problems I've had with this program.

5.0 out of 5 stars good value: excellent starter set, January 2, 2007
By Sparks (United States) - See all my reviews
I feel the lessons go a little too slowly for my taste but maybe that's because Japanese is my 2nd foreign language (after French) and Ive already developed some useful learning skills and shortcuts. You really can't go wrong though I recommend supplementing this with additional study of grammar ("Teach Yourself" series is good) as the conversations taught here are limited by necessity and it's sometimes difficult to make out what exactly the narrators are saying without a written transcript. You get 8 hours of Japanese for $32 so this is a cheap and very effective way to learn. Dont hesitate to buy :)

5.0 out of 5 stars I've been looking for a product like this for years!, March 23, 2007
By Cliff Jones "Vokation Media" (College Station, TX United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A couple months ago, I found the kind of all-audio course I was looking for in a library. The only problem was that it was for French, and I really wanted to learn Japanese. Anyway, the first system I used was Michel Thomas's, and it was great!

Now that I knew there was something like that on the market, I looked for the Japanese equivalent. (Michel Thomas doesn't make one.) I first got a Learn in Your Car product, which I regretted. It was just one translation after another with no participation required.

I couldn't be happier with Pimsleur's system! It's even better than Michel Thomas's! Everything is spoken very clearly and is broken up when it needs to be. You're asked questions non-stop, so you can't tune out even if you want to. There's even normal Japanese conversations thrown in to push you as far as you can go. I love it!
