No Study Guide!, July 13, 2007
This review is from: Conversational Vietnamese : Learn to Speak and Understand Vietnamese with Pimsleur Language Programs (Conversational) (Audiofy Digital Audiobook Chips) (Cards)
The chip worked on my computer and PDA right away with no problems and the interface is easy to use and navigate. I am working my way through the first dialogue right now so I cannot comment on the overall content of the lessons (by the way, this is not my first Vietnamese language lesson). My problem is that there is NO STUDY GUIDE!! I dont need a complete Vietnamese dictionary or grammer book, but a small booklet of the dialogues would be really helpful to keep track of my progress and possibly learn a few written words that might help when I get there. I also think the visual aid helps reinforce the learning. And for $50 I don't think it is too much to ask to get get a brief phrase book! Without it, I have no idea what is covered in the other lessons so I cannot skip ahead to one that might be more useful. Also, when you read the product description it really does not tell you what topics are covered in the guide. I want to learn some tourist Vietnamese so when I go there I can get around: "Where is the bathroom?", "How much does this cost?", "I'll have another, please", "When is the temple open?", etc. So far, the first lesson is an American man asking a Vietnamese woman if she understands English. This is not a good sign in terms of the focus of the product. If you want to know if someone understands English, you don't need to learn how to ask in their language, you can ask them in English. If they don't undestand English... ugh, do I really need to spell this out? I am giving this product three stars because the audiofy chip works (and that is important) and the lesson I am working on is clear and well paced. So, the execution is good. But I can't give it four or five stars because of the lack of supporting materials and the sinking feeling that I am not going to get the practical Vietnamese I need ("Which way to the hotel, please?") but slightly more formal, classroom conversation material ("I have two brothers. How many sisters are in your family? What is your profession? I am a student..."). And if I had known that, I would not have spent the money on this product.
