5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove, March 6, 2009
By
This review is from: Conversations: Find Your Niche (Paperback)
This book is a treasure trove of wisdom about life and work. Van Twelves has done a masterful job of providing a process for evaluating one's possibilities as a working person with his Roadmap. This analysis is appropriate both for the young person just starting out, or for a person in an unsatisfying job, wanting to make a change but not knowing quite how to do it. There is also a lot of excellent advice about how to be a successful interview candidate, and a valued employee - much of it in Section 1, but also in the interviews.

The interviews cover a wide variety of professions - it's fascinating to get insights into what somebody really does all day. The author's advice to "read the last question" in all the interviews is excellent - all 150 people have valuable things to say, gleaned from their experience in very different arenas.

This can be an important, life-altering book for anyone fortunate enough to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have!, February 17, 2009

This review is from: Conversations: Find Your Niche (Paperback)
The primary focus of this book might be high school and college students, but it works for people of any age. Where was this book when I was a student? Fortunately, the author recognizes that some of us are already out of school. He says that, "It's okay to be a late bloomer." Zeroing in on my niche has been a meandering and evolutionary process. I could have done it much more quickly with this kind of a guide. The schools did a great job of teaching me how to read and write, but they didn't do so well at teaching me how to choose a career that really matches my values, interests and aptitudes. They didn't caution me about decision traps like picking the same thing that my friends are doing, or picking something because I like a teacher. Those people will eventually move on and I will be left doing something I don't really love. Conversations: Find Your Niche! not only provides a roadmap for making a good decision, it addresses pitfalls that have never even occurred to me.

The sooner you read this book, the better your choice of profession will be. Great book! My thanks to the author and his family for making it available to the rest of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start Your Career Search Here!, February 13, 2009

This is a terrific book! I bought this guide for my sons (in high school and college) to help them lay out their plans for college and beyond. As I started reading through a few of the interviews, I found that I was fascinated by the information I was gaining for myself. The breadth of occupations represented is impressive and the perspectives of the people interviewed are insightful, interesting, and helpful. My younger son found the book on the table and starting reading through it on his own. This led to our first serious discussion of what he wants to do as a career and what he needs to do to get there. With this book and the many helpful tools in it, he will be much better prepared than I ever was when I ventured out into the real world and I am excited for him to enjoy the process of finding his niche.

This would be a very helpful and valuable resource for parents, teachers, libraries, or career centers to share with anyone ready to take charge of their future.

I wish this book were available when I was choosing my career. I will have my 5 children go through this workbook. It is full of interviews discussing work in various careers, a chance to job shadow over 150 professions. Just as important are worksheets to help match a career with skills and interests. The additional references available are very valuable, a great time saver having it in one location. With 84% of people not working in their dream job, I trust this book will help my children find their dream job and have an incredible career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for today's economy!!!, February 14, 2009
This review is from: Conversations: Find Your Niche (Paperback)
First off, the price of this book is a steal considering that it's 600 pages long and full of priceless resources and information. Secondly, it's perfect for those finding themselves in the common situation of having to look for a job. With over 2.6 million jobs lost since this recession began in 2007 this is a book that should be read and used as often as needed.
