2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
I heard All Right Here before Conversations, though Conversations came out first. While I'm glad to see that Sara grew and evolved into something wonderful (All Right Here) and that I heard the better CD first, I'm not impressed with her older works. I would not have picked up any of her other music if I had heard this first.

Perhaps I am a rare Christian,...

~BUYER BEWARE~ Once discovering Sara Groves' music....good luck finding any that compares!

Since becoming a loyal fan of Sara three years ago, I can honestly say that she is a genuine, introspective genius as far as singers/songwriters go and her music won't disappoint! Her songs will strike a chord in your soul, heal your heart and become your prayers. Every song is AWESOME! I am still moved to tears every time I hear `Going Home,' `He's Always Been Faithful,' and `This Journey Is My Own.'

Her songs are process songs that discuss topics that EVERY Christian deals with but may be afraid to talk about. Sara cuts right to the chase about our real life issues in our walk with Christ. Her songs resonate humility, honesty and sincerity in a way that make you feel you are not alone in your faith struggles and that it's okay to question and to not have all the answers. Her lyrics are a vehicle for deeper thought about yourself and your spiritual journey.

Both `Conversations' and her debut album `Past the Wishing' have comforted me and ministered to me in many dark valleys and have URGED me to take that next step in my walk with Him to get `Past the Wishing' and to start doing more to serve Him! Sara is a vessel for God and He uses her soulful, beautiful voice and lyrics to reach those who are in need of Him. Sara takes her listeners straight to the heart of a REAL Jesus who is `The Word.'

If you are unsure whether to buy her music ~ just check out her website at ... and browse through the hundreds of guest book entries from people whose lives have been transformed by her music! And if you ever get the chance to make one of her concerts to hear the stories behind her songs, you'll fall even more in love with her! I've recommended both of Sara's albums to so many friends and have given them as birthday and Christmas gifts and now they are all hooked fans like me! Do yourself a favor and to save on shipping ~ don't just buy one CD ~ but stock up for gifts. You'll be glad you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Check out this marvelous new Christian artist!, March 20, 2001
By
Soozie4Him (Chicago suburbs) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Conversations (Audio CD)
When I first heard Sara Groves' song "The Word" on
TodaysChristianMusic.com, I thought to myself "Hmm, a new song by
Carolyn Arends perhaps?". While the voice sounded similar at
first, after listening a bit more, I realized that Sara's style is
truly unique - truly her own. And this album is a TREASURE TROVE of
marvelous music, with beautiful vocals and lyrics that you won't soon
forget.

It's going to be hard to pick a favorite song on this CD,
but after listening to a few, here are my
thoughts...

"Conversations", the title song, is about not
knowing how to say it, not knowing how to have a conversation with
someone about what Jesus means to us. I'm sure most of us can
identify! "I would like to share with you what makes me
complete. I don't claim to have found the Truth, but I know it has
found me. . the only thing that isn't meaningless to me is Jesus
Christ and and way he set me free. This is all that I have. This is
all that I am."

"The Word", taken from the first
chapter of John's gospel, is my favorite on the album so far. After
hearing 10 seconds of this song, I was hooked on the music! In
addition to the incredible instrumentation on this song, this song's
lyrics are so powerful. She talks about how people try to find God in
so many ways, yet they don't open up their Bible that sits on the
shelf. People try on ideas like they try on clothes and discard them
just as easily when they "don't fit".

"Hello
Lord" examines what we often feel when we're trying to make a
decision and we're listening to the Lord and trying to hear Him, and
maybe we're not as patient as we should be. "Right now I don't
hear so well and I was wondering if you could speak up. I know that
you tore the veil so I could sit with you in person and hear what
you're saying, but right now, I just can't hear you."

"Generations" was inspired by Deuteronomy 11. We're not
just reasonsible for our own actions, but the effects our actions will
have on our descendants: "Eve was the first but she wasn't the
last. If I were honest with myself, had I been standing at that tree,
my mouth and my hands would be covered with fruit." Lord, help us
make good decisions!

If you like folk/pop/contemporary Christian
music, you'll love this album. Sara Groves is in a category all by
herself, though, and you'll have to buy this CD to find out for
yourself! This CD is extra-good because Sara has written all the
songs herself!

If you enjoy this album, be sure to get a hold of her
first indie release "Past the Wishing".

5.0 out of 5 stars Sara is sincerely refreshing, June 22, 2001
By
This review is from: Conversations (Audio CD)
In a world of sickly-sweet pop-influenced Contemporary Christian music, Sara Groves stands apart as a brutally (and beautifully) honest singer-songwriter whose every song is a poem to God and fellow believers. Influenced by the likes of the Indigo Girls, and compared to such giants as Rich Mullins and Keith Green, Sara's got a folksy style and a unique songwriting sense. In many of her songs, Sara has broached subjects usually not discussed in Christian music, and takes an honest look at herself, God, and the world in terms that can't help but ring true.

Each song on this album is unique and enjoyable, and Sara's vocals and lyrics are treasures. If you need an antidote to some of the more pop music out there these days, check this album out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great singing, beautiful music, and thoughtful lyrics, August 15, 2002

I first heard of Sara Groves when a Christian radio show played part of The Word when returning from a commercial. Right then and there I knew that I just had to hear more! I found this CD, and am very glad that I did. Ms. Groves' music is an excellent combination of great singing, beautiful music, and thoughtful lyrics. I like listening to this CD in my car, where it puts me into a contemplative mood. I highly recommend this CD to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!, May 16, 2002
By
This review is from: Conversations (Audio CD)
Amazing! That one word does not even come close to describing this CD. I first heard of Sara while watching the Dove Awards a few weeks ago. And although she only sang about 30 seconds of her song I immediately knew that I had to buy her CD. I was not disappointed.

She is a highly skilled/blessed songwriter. Her lyrics are so brutally honest and real that you can literally feel what she is singing about.

"Painting Pictures of Egypt" Wow. This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. She talks about how our efforts to move on from where we have been to what God has in store for us often leads us to lingering on the past, even though we know that is not His plan.

I normally do not buy "pop" or CCM music. The "christian music biz" has left a stale taste in my mouth, but this...this is so much more than what the Nashville machine has spoon-fed to us.

I put her music along saints such as Keith Green and Rich Mullins. I highly recommend that you pick this CD up and her first CD as well. I heard some songs off of that and I can't wait to buy that one, too.

So, no matter what your musical tastes are (I'm a hip-hop and rock fan!), you will not be disappointed with "Conversations".

5.0 out of 5 stars great Christian music, April 28, 2003
By
This review is from: Conversations (Audio CD)
I have the lyrics to the title track printed out and they are up on the wall of my cube here at work. The amazing thing about Sara Groves is that her lyrics are just as inspiring when there is no music as when she is singing. Sara Groves writes and sings about experiences in the Christian life, and about searching to be closer to God. A former teacher, Sara has a sound and style all her own.

The music is lyrically deep and touching and focused on God. There is none of the pre-packaged bubblegum sound that is plaguing so much of today's music, even Christian artists. Sara Groves is the real deal. The title track is one of my favorite songs by any singer, and is by far the most meaningful song that is on any of Sara's three albums. It speaks about trying to communicate Jesus to a friend and how difficult this can be. Other excellent songs on the album are "The Word", "How Is It Between Us", and "Cave of Adullum". Sara's album (this is her second) is very good music, and helps define some of what I feel and think as a Christian.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite CDs, July 26, 2003

This is one of the best CDs I've ever purchased. Sara Groves captures the joy and the struggle of working her way closer to God. "Painting Pictures of Egypt" is the best. I've given this CD to at least 8 people - it's wonderful. You won't be disappointed.

I was looking for some thoughtful prayer music to listen to on my way to work. There are many choices out there, but I must say I am soooo thankful that I found Sara Groves. My favorite song is "The Word" but all of them are good. Others have said why this is so wonderful, but what I simply want to say it this album really says something and is beyond price. I also bought Past the Wishing which I just got. So far So great. I am glad that Sara got past the wishing. Hopefully we all can. God Bless.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of adult CCM, October 2, 2001
This review is from: Conversations (Audio CD)
After recording one of the highest selling indie albums in recent years, Sara Groves entertained a number of offers from large companies. Instead of giving in to the image-making machine, she opted to partner with a company that would allow her to develop her artistic voice. The result is Conversations, an album that grows on me with each listen and one which my wife plays constantly. Musically Sara describes herself as "neo-folk/pop" and there is definitely a folk sensibility to her music with some nice pop hooks that go along nicely with the acoustic serenity that accompanies her Joni Mitchell-like vocals. Shades of Sarah McLachlan and Shawn Colvin are also apparent in her music but Sara's lyrics are where she sets herself apart. Brazenly honest, thought provoking, deeply spiritual and introspective, Conversations allows the listener to eves-drop on Sara's prayers, dreams, and discussions with others. The sobering "What Do I Know?" finds an eighty-eight year old friend of Groves sharing that despite a life of faith, she is afraid to die. A piano and string quartet provide a sparse background to this stark tale that ends with unexpected hope. In contrast, "Pictures of Egypt" employs a full band with Groves being kicked out of the nest of security with lines such as "The future feels so hard and I want to go back / The places that used to fit me / Cannot hold the things I've learned." "The Journey Is My Own" finds Groves looking back on the changes in her life with some emotive, cathartic melodies and a song that grows and develops as one suspects does the experience of the singer. The track which seems to capture her personality the best is the final track which features Sara alone on the piano with a swinging, rolling melody, recorded live. While definitely not for everyone, folk and pop-folk fans would definitely enjoy the tantalizing melodies and powerful yet vulnerable, introspective lyrics. Sara Groves is the real deal: an honest musician and (dare I say it?) poet who is more interested in expressing herself and making music than making a buck.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Christian Singer!, September 5, 2001
This review is from: Conversations (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of gospel music for nearly all of my 23 yrs. of life and I just recently discovered Sara Groves! I had been flipping the t.v. like usual last week when I came across Sara singing the the song "The Word" and loved her and the song instantly. She has such a unique and beautiful voice and a great sound that is very rarely found in gospel music. I had to have this CD!!! I really get the meanings of her songs and they all seem to tell a story about Jesus Christ and his love for us. My favorite songs off this album are "The Word," "Conversations," and the beautiful "He's always been Faithful!"
