A fine addition to any theater's library. Longtime Broadway stage manager Harris has put together a series of interviews with some of America's greatest stage actors. Harris talks to stalwarts such as Stockard Channing, Charles Durning, Julie Harris, Madeline Kahn, and other Broadway actors, some of them known and others up-and-coming. The insights into acting by Lettice and Lovage star Julie Harris and the versatile Durning are wonderful, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III star Sab Shimono and Madeline Kahn are humorous. Harris' familiarity with the actors is a big plus; he often gets personal perceptions from such stars as Victor Garber, who tells of his career playing characters as widely varied as Jesus, John Wilkes Booth, and Liberace. Twenty-six-year-old Cynthia Nixon (The Heidi Chronicles) is an open, honest pleasure; and one actor relates how he stayed a vegetarian after not eating meat in order to get in character to play an animal-rights expert. Conversations would make an ideal book-on-tape and is sure to be popular among theater students, though the casual playgoer may find some of the interviews too "inside." Joe Collins

About the Author

Roy Harris has stage managed on Broadway Wendy Wasserstein's An American Daughter, The Sisters Rosensweig, and The Heidi Chronicles and the revival of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke. Off-Broadway, he stage managed Jon Robin Baitz's A Fair Country, A.R. Gurney's Sylvia, and Scott McPherson's Marvin's Room, among many others. He is the editor of Conversations in the Wings: Talking About Acting (Heinemann, 1994).

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was great to hear the Actors tell their stories about acting in plays and film. The book is done in a Q&A conversational format. My favorite interviews with Stockard Channing, Charles Durning, Victor Garber, Madeline Kahn and Cynthia Nixon. It was very informative to hear about their experiences.
