Product Description

The Specialty AV HDV-889 HDMI to DVI-D + Audio Adapter is a unique device that converts the HDMI signal to a digital video DVI-D output and a digital Coax or Analog L/R stereo audio output (selectable). This adapter lets you connect your HDMI source to a DVI-D HDCP display and enjoy high quality digital or analog stereo audio at the same time. With the HDMI to DVI-D + Audio Adapter, HDMI home theater devices and computer systems can easily be connected to any DVI-D display for the full digital video and audio experience. Supports PC resolutions up to 1600x1200 (UXGA) and TV resolutions up to 1920x1080 (1080P). When the analog audio output is selected, multi-channel (5.1,7.1) or 2-channel (PCM) digital HDMI audio will be converted to 2-cahannel analog audio. A 3.5mm male to stereo RCA female adapter cable is included. When the digital coax audio is selected the audio will be at 5.1 unless HDMI audio is PCM, then the digital coax audio will also remain PCM. Note: When the HDMI input is HDCP encrypted the DVI-D output is encrypted as well. Package contents; HDMI to DVI-D + Audio Converter, 100-240V to 5VDC power adapter, user document, 3.5mm to Stereo RCA adapter cable. IMPORTANT: Please make sure that your DVI display is capable of processing the resolution you will be sending from your HDMI device. For example, if your DVI display is only capable of 1080i or 720p and you will be sending signal from an Xbox or PS3, the default HDMI resolution for these devices is 1080p so you must manually set output HDMI resolution to 1080i or 720p, whichever is compatible with your DVI display. When using a Chromecast dongle, DVI display must be capable of processing 1080p as this device is not capable of setting to 1080i or 720p and its default output resolution is 1080p.

The delivery was on time, good packaging. The converter did not work for me though. I have a Chromecast and an older TV with a 1080i DVI input. Direct connection with the Cromecast through the adapter works fine except there is no sound of course, Hooking the same Chromecast through this "HDMI to DVI with Audio Converter Digital S/PDIF Coax and Analog Stereo... " does not work.
I am giving it 5 stars because of the help I got from SPECIALTY-AV. I emailed them with the question. After some research and experimentation they explained that while the direct connection to the DVI somehow shakes hands with the Chromcast the converter breaks the feedback to the Chromecast and the handshaking. As it outputs 1080p only the signal does not go through the 1080i input. I am thankful to the SPECIALTY-AV for helping me to figure out the problem but still, had to return the item to Amazon. So, check your DVI input mode before buying this item. Would be nice if the converter had a 1080i / 1080p switch same as it has a mode switch for an audio signal.

I needed to convert an HDMI output from a new Blu-Ray player to DVI input to an older 37" LCD monitor AND I needed audio. While you can purchase an HDMI to DVI cable elsewhere, there's no audio and you are forced to purchase another converter (Coax audio to L/R RCA) to complete the conversion.
This product does both by breaking out the HDMI audio, conditioning it, and outputting it through a mini phone jack (it comes with a mini-phone plug to L/R RCA adapter cable).
Has worked perfectly out-of-the-box for the past two weeks and passes a beautiful video picture and quality audio. Quality construction and all parts needed were included.

I have a first-generation HDTV which has the DVI input port rather than HDMI. For some older HD devices I was able to wire component or use a HDMI to DVI cable plus audio cables; however all the newer HD devices (Xbox, BlueRay players, etc) have only HDMI outputs with integrated audio.

Used this in conjunction with an HDMI pigtail to connect several devices through the DVI port and hear the sound without issue so far.

I bought the HDMI to DVI with Audio Converter Digital S/PDIF Coax and Analog Stereo Adapter from Specialty-AV because 11 year old tv only had dvi-d (hdcp compliant) 1080i or 720p input for picture and only analog stereo RCA input for sound.
Our new Samsung BD-H6500 blu ray player only uses hdmi output with a 1080p . When connected to the converter box I’m not tech savy enough to figure out why I could get sound from the inserted dvd but no picture. Yet, if I connected an hdmi cable directly from the blue ray player to the old tv using an hdmi/dvi-d converter plug, I got a picture… hmmm. (no sound of course)

I emailed customer service to tell them I have to return the item because it doesn’t seem to work for me and Mark explained the following:

“Can you try manually setting your DVD players default HDMI output resolution to either 720p or 1080i as default resolution.

Your DVD payers default HDMI resolution is 1080p, when connecting directly via an HDMI to DVI adapter the DVD player senses required resolution which is compatible with your TV and automatically adjusts itself accordingly to 1080i/720p.

When going through converter this handshake between units is not possible so DVD players HDMI resolution must already be set manually from default 1080p to 1080i/720p.”

I initially thought Mark was asking if there was an external switch on the back of the blue ray,,,no, no no, Then it dawned on me he meant in the blu ray settings..

Having finally found a way to write 1080-60P 28Mbps video files to both DVD and Blu-ray blanks (with CyberLink PowerDirector 13), I needed an updated Blu-ray player to successfully play the disks. Around "Black Friday" I grabbed a Sony BDP-S3200 Blu-ray player on sale for about $50 that I liked, BUT, it appears that many new players offer no analogue audio output with video (only an HDMI output and digital audio output - but the latter is disabled when an HDMI cable is plugged in, found out when a digital-to-analogue audio converter failed to work on the digital output!). The solution was buying this little box (although it cost more than the player...), which splits HDMI to DVI for video and also to functional digital/analogue audio outputs, which I need in my system. It works well, and I can now enjoy the benefits from viewing 1080-60P 28Mbps videos I make, on disks!

Wasn't exactly what I expected. Was advertised as HDMI to Coax converter, but received was actually a HDMI to RCA, not coax
