Not a Novelization Of The Game,
By Ellie O. (VA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Conviction (Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell) (Mass Market Paperback)
It should be noted that while this is a great read for fans of the other Splinter Cell/"David Michaels" Clancy novels, this is NOT a novelization of the game (Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction) it shares a title with. The book and game series do not coexist in the same Clancyverse, so to speak, and while both game and novel star a rogue Sam Fisher, his reasons and goals are completely different to fit the established backstories of their respective mediums. This is good news for Splinter Cell fans who want more and original Sam Fisher tales, but not for anyone who thought they were getting a sneak peak at the fifth game that has been long in development.
4/5 (Sorry, new "Michaels", but Raymond Benson is a tough act to follow. Still a great read.)

LOVED THIS BOOK!!!,
This review is from: Conviction (Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell) (Mass Market Paperback)
Couldn't put this book done. I've enjoyed all of the books in the Splinter Cell series, but I'd say that I enjoyed this one more than the others. It of course is a completely different viewpoint from the others as Sam Fisher is now being hunted by Third Echelon rather than working for them.
Loved it. Buy it. Now. Hoping to get Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Endgame ASAP.

I like the Splinter Cell stories, but this one was a little different. I found the story line to be the usual fast-paced story line with no rest for the hero, but I thought the action was a little too predictable; like it was fulfilling a recipe. He has a broken foot; still runs to safety. He's trapped in a crumbling building and he escapes while the team chasing him is stuck... I think I am needing a little more imagination and more information about the techno-gadgets he uses. Still, an entertaining story and I'm looking forward to Endgame to see the "other side".

Excellent book,

I was very impressed with Splinter Cell Conviction, it has a fast, intriguing plot, and an interesting premise. It's an interesting change to see Sam Fisher being pursued by the agency he once worked for

Good Story, Fast Pace,
By A. Reader "A. Reader" (AL USA) - See all my reviews

I read a lot of heavy material on a daily basis, so having something like the Splinter Cell story helps me shift my mind into neutral and just read for the enjoyment of reading. I have read all the books in the series, and this one continues the tradition of being fast-paced and entertaining. If you enjoyed the previous books in the series, you will most likely be entertained by this one.

I wanted to love this book. Really, I did. I'm a big fan of the Splinter Cell games and had previously read the other books in the series. I knew that there was going to be a big change in direction in the new game, and was expecting as much in the book, but what I got was a jarring read that seemed to yank me back out of the action just as I was getting into it. Sure, Sam is on the run thanks to the events of the Double Agent game, but the book makes no mention of those past events aside from passing notes that Sam killed Director Lambert. The book bounces from location to location and only pauses once the action is exhausted at each venue to throw new orders at Sam on where he's headed next, which seemed a bit disjointed for a book and more like level progression in one of the games. Combine that with the blatant product placement (which makes me wonder if the ghost-writer was ordered to stick in X number of plugs for the iPhone, Google Earth, Lycos, DHL, Sony Memory Stick, et cetera) and it makes me think the writer was stuck working from a strict playbook that was laid out by Ubisoft and the book editor. All in all, I'd only mark this one as a "must-read" for rabid fans of the series. Everyone else can skip it and they won't be missing much.
Sidebar note: Given that this book and Splinter Cell: Endgame were published in such quick succession it makes me wonder if they had two ghost-writers working on this at the same time and decided to go ahead and publish both books or if it was originally intended to be a single book and they had to split it due to length. I'm currently reading Endgame and will be reviewing it once I've finished it.

Guilty pleasure,

This review is from: Conviction (Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell) (Mass Market Paperback)
Conviction is a book based on a video game, the fact it carries the Tom Clancy name helps but doesn't give it a free pass. The book itself it well written if a bit cliche and predictable. But this book was created for entertainment, not to teach or impart knowledge, it is totally a guilty pleasure. And there is nothing wrong with that in the least. It feel a bit more fast paced than the previous Splinter Cell books and you must suspends a good deal of disbelief in order to enjoy it. But if you can do that what you get is a good read. This is a Same Fisher you will recognize but he has changed and you can see it in the little bit of character development present in the book. The story is a bit far fetched but its easy enough to suspend reality and just enjoy. If you are a Splinter Cell fan already its worth picking up, if you are on the fence, or just a fan of military non fiction its worth a look through. If you've read any of the previous novels and enjoyed them you won't be disappointed with this iteration.

I've read all Splinter Cell books. The first two books, Splinter Cell and Operation Baracuda, where awesome books. I found it extremely hard to put them down. I found myself barely getting through the following two books, but Conviction did it for me. The first 3/4 of the book was the most boring ever!!! The writer was obviously just trying to fill his "page quota", if you will, by writting every single step, turn, thought, and what ever else he could think of to fill in the pages. I really had to force myself to finish reading this book. If you must read, start at the middle and, maybe, then you'll want to read until the end.
