Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When the more-than-75-year-old cooking bible, Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook, pays homage to breast cancer research, it's definitely become a mainstream cause. In addition to the 1,200 recipes and 700 color photographs, on top of the detailed information and illustrated charts that the publication's editors are known for, the newest feature of this limited-edition guide is its "pink plaid" section devoted to directions on how to eat for life--that is, instructions on miracle foods, like antioxidants, and the best low-fat, health-filled recipes to tempt anyone's taste buds, from a southwestern spinach omelet to reduced-calorie creamy mocha custards. Arrayed in a ready-to-use ringed binder, this thirteenth edition stands rightfully as a cooking reference book, to have and to hold. Barbara Jacobs

"The Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook," first published in 1930, has been one of America's most popular culinary guides for seventy-five years, with more than 37 million copies sold. It was my first cookbook, given to me by my mother-in-law right after I was married, a long time ago. Usually identifiable by the popular red plaid cover, this brand new 12th edition is different - its plaid is PINK! The pink color stands for Breast Cancer Awareness. Please note - the title is different also, "New Cook Book, Limited Edition 'Pink Plaid:' For Breast Cancer Awareness." The high quality of the 1200 recipes, new ones and old favorites too, plus glossary, ingredient substitutions, cooking charts, diagrams, preparation and storage information, is the same, however, as the caliber of your trusted old red plaid version. There are 700 beautiful photographs illustrating finished dishes and fresh products.

An important new feature is the "Eating for Life" section, containing important cancer awareness information, dietary and lifestyle suggestions and over 60 recipes geared to help readers reduce the risk of disease. Better Homes and Gardens has committed to donating a portion of the profits from the book to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

As with my first Better Homes and Garden Cookbook, I received this beautiful edition as a birthday gift. I plan to give copies, this year, to many friends for their birthdays, or Hanukkah/Christmas, and/or just for friendship's sake. As I read recently, there is a "triple gift impact: a sought-after limited edition cookbook, meaningful cancer-fighting information, and a significant contribution to a highly-visible, respected foundation." How can you go wrong?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Healthy Eating and more November 9, 2005
Format:Ring-bound
Happily, I received the cookbook earlier than I expected.I bought this in honor of my aunt, Julina Agus Tupas, who died of breast cancer last year, and one who was a great cook herself. She would be impressed and happy with this excellent resource for healthy eating and living. The cook book was in great condition and the contents are useful for healthy cooking and helpful to a beginning cook like me. The illustrations are superb and colorful. The lay-out of the pages are tastefully done. I especially liked the introductory material on kitchen utensils and equipment and the section on cooking that helps prevent cancer. Congratulations to the publisher and Amazon.com! I would highly recommend this cook book for all who love healthy cooking and eating.
