5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice
This is a very nice old style Candy Thermometer.
These glass ones are getting harder to find.

I am an avid HomeBrewer and I can use this to check my boiling water in my kettle with ease.

I know everyone now adays thinks that digital are great.
But they are highly inaccurate unless you can afford an Infa-Red model.
And they...

The thermometer I received had a fatal flaw: the clip is made of aluminum, a soft metal.

When you clip the thermometer to the pot, the aluminum bends open. The sensing part of the thermometer then slides to and touches the edge of the pot.

When you clip the thermometer to the pot, the aluminum bends open. The sensing part of the thermometer then slides to and touches the edge of the pot.

Since the pot is hotter than the liquid inside, the thermometer indicates the liquid is 5 to 10 degrees hotter it actually is, even after calibrating the thermometer.

And they start around $90.00 and go up in the Thousands.

This is accurate and will do what you need it to do.

I purchased this thermometer to measure the temp of my milk for making yogurt. The tip broke very easily. Though it was a very good price, I guess you get what you pay for.

This is great for older folks with bad eyes (like my mom) as the numbers are very large on this thermometer. Works great and is a steal @ $5

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Perfectly, October 31, 2011

I couldn't locate a reasonably-priced glass candy thermometer in a mortar-and-brick store around here, so I turned to my trusty friend Amazon for some help before candy-making season gets into full swing. I was specifically looking for a glass candy thermometer without metal that would scratch my nonstick cookware--most of the ones I had seen in-store were enclosed in metal cages, rendering them useless for nonstick pan-owners. This one fits the bill perfectly. The metal clip attaches to the outside of the pan, and while I agree with another reviewer who said something about the actual pan being hotter than the ingredients inside, I didn't experience any trouble with the temperature being wildly inaccurate. The clip held perfectly and I was able to adjust the thermometer up and down inside the pan according to my ingredient level. Clean-up was a breeze--I just soaked it in some lukewarm water while I finished my candy-making, then wiped it clean with a soapy rag and rinsed. The plastic tube keeps it safe for storage, and I also like that the tube has the average temperatures for different stages of candy and deep-frying. I don't know how the other reviewer stored it, but I slid the thermometer inside and left the clip outside, securing it to the tube. It seemed fine to me. Thanks for another great deal, Amazon!

I have three glass candy thermometers and this is the best of the bunch. They are all a little slow to respond but this one is actually pretty good. Nice big size, clear and easy to read. Good clip that holds reasonably. None of these clips are ideal, they never are but what are you gonna do? The Polder one I have has a real flimsy clip and the Taylor one I have is too slow. I would go with this one as far as the cheaper glass thermometers go.

I seldom cook, but wanted to make my mother-in-law's recipe for pecan pralines. I bought this thermometer just for that. And I'm really glad I did, because it worked great for a novice like me. The clip slides up and down to adjust to the depth of your pan (the tip shouldn't touch the bottom). The built-in temperature list was useful. The numbers on the thermometer were easy to read. I'm glad it had a protective cover since the thermometer is glass, but wish it stayed in place better. I wound up storing it in a baggie to protect it better.

works great - no problems - the clip is handy since its adjustable and you can use it to keep the thermometer at the right level. I use it for testing the milk temp in making yogurt

4.0 out of 5 stars good old fashioned glass thermometer, December 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cook-Rite, 90308, Glass Candy and Deep Fry Thermometer (Kitchen)
I wanted an old fashioned glass thermometer to replace the one that got lost somewhere along the way. This is as close as it gets to the old model I had.

The clip on the side is mostly useless because it clasps the glass thermometer tight to the side of my new stainless steel 7 ply cooking pans. Perhaps if I had the old fashioned pans with small rims it would work differently. I only use it to measure the temperature of water for making tea. Might find another use for it sometime in the future though.

The plastic sleeve is nice to protect the glass from becoming scratched in a drawer, but the end of the bulb extends beyond the sleeve so you still have to be careful where you put the thing for storage. But I got what I wanted......just a basic simple tool that seems to work fine.

I couldn't have bought a better one. I've used this for candy making and deep frying- and it's easy to read, to use and to clean!
