Home Baking!,
This review is from: Cookbook from Amish Kitchens: Breads (Cookbooks from Amish Kitchens) (Paperback)
No need for a bread machine with these recipes! Simple, down to earth, and best of all....Delicious! There is no substitute for the home made taste of fresh baked bread and muffins. These recipes are simple to follow, and easy to make. The Potato Bread recipe is my personal favorite, but then again, mmm love those bran muffins also!

I have all of these adorable little 'Cook Books from Amish Kitchens', and have really enjoyed them. The are very small and simple... the complete opposite of a coffee-table/display-style cookbooks we see most often today. This is a thin pamphlet with matte paper and does not include interior photos of any recipes (excluding the cover). The text is in a handwritten-style font and clearly explained. The recipes are very homey with basic ingredients and techniques; nothing fancy. Simple, delicious recipes in a simple, small booklet. RECOMMENDED.

The Amish bread cookbook was a 'stocking stuffer' gift for my brother-in-law, who decided to try making his own bread. According to my sister, who's made several of the recipes, they are good and easy and don't require a lot of fancy ingredients. Please note that this is a booklet, not a huge book, and it's pretty basic......but the recipes are good and you can't beat the price.

I love this little cookbook. It has a variety of recipes. I have tried three of the recipes so far and each one has turned out very good and very tasty. For this money you can't pass this by.

I purchased this in hopes of finding some new Amish bread recipes to make or to learn some variations on the recipes that I currently know. For the price this is a decent buy if you are in a pinch and need some recipes that are fairly good.
My main issue with this book is that almost every recipe makes far too much food. The raisin bread recipe makes 5 loaves and if you want to make cinnamon rolls, be prepared to make 4 dozen! While a person can certainly cut down the recipe using division it doesn't seem worth the time to recalculate the recipes only to end up with very odd measurements. The recipes themselves are fine. If you've never had or cooked Amish food before you will probably think these recipes are fantastic. As a whole though these are just a few of your standard Amish bread recipes and nothing more. It was a bit of a letdown to not have any pictures or drawings in this little cookbook. Not having to print pictures is probably one of the reasons that this book is so low in cost which is a plus. However, I like having an image as a goal to work toward but that's just my personal preference this may not be an issue for some people. If you really want some good Amish recipes I would recommend any of the Lovina Eicher cookbooks instead of these. However, these cookbooks cost around $15-$19 so if you just need a quick cheap book of some Amish breads and you don't mind doing some math then this book will suffice. |
