All around fabulous,
By Julia Owens (Louisville, KY) - See all my reviews

Kudos! Great book, especially for the occasional baker. I love love love the lemon ginger gems (soft, you add crystallized ginger 1 package 3-ounce cream cheese, lemon zest to sugar dough). I like more innovative cookeis like that and the coffee toffee bars and pretty much all of the cheesecake creations throughout the book. The rest of the gang in my house can't get enough of some of the simpler ideas (my husband can vouch for the fluffer nutter choc chip cookie sandwiches: peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwiched between chocolate chip cookies--so easy and so YUMMY!) and the big cookies you can make and decorate like a pizza--big kid favorite.
Hope there's a follow-up book, becasue I'll get it.

Love it--Like Cake MIx Doctor but for Cookies!,
By Dian Franzmann (Salt Lake City, UT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cookie Dough Delights: More Than 150 Foolproof Recipes for Cookies, Bars and Other Treats Made with Refrigerated Cookie Dough (Paperback)
I am so thrilled by this book. I love the Cake mix doctor books and 101 things to do with cake mix book, too, but honestly I am more of a cookie baker/eater. I always have at least 1 or 2 tubes of the refrigerated cookie dough in my freezer. Never thought about "doctoring" them before I found this book online. Made the toffee chippers and blackberry cheescake bars for the weekend after receiving the book--absolutley perfect and so easy. I agree with the previous reviewer that this is a great one for kids, too. My son had a great time helping to make the toffee chippers

I ordered this a month back when I found it here. Got it last week. Wonderful. Like the CAKE MIX DOCTOR but for cookies.Have already made three recipes including the Red White and Blue Tart and Buttered Rum Raisin Cookies. The Key Lime Cookies are out of control delicious. I like that it is limited to chocolate chip and sugar dough (not the ones that are harder to find like gingerbread and white chocolate)--so you can buy the store brand dough, too. Lots of kid-friendly sounding things, too--my 8 year daughter has already made a "to-do" list of the cookies she wants to bake.

Lovely book, excellent writing and wide range of recipes,

I picked this up in a local Borders out of curiosity (and a bit of "are you kidding me? A whole book on cookie dough?"). But was very pleasantly surprised. This is an excellent cookbook, I would describe it as a thoughtful cookbook (far more than an assemblage of recipes). The writing is quite charming (the notes at the top of recipes range from insightful to amusing) and the introduction is a great explanation of cookie how-to without being too pedantic--a nice combination to reach both experienced bakers and newbies (I fall somewhere in the middle). I have prepared two things so far: the mandarin orange & marmalade tart (heavenly--very easy, made for supper party) and the coffee & cream white chocolate chunkers (ate 5 in one sitting--very dangerous). This is one that will not get dusty on my shelf. Delightful!

Winner--can't wait to make Christmas Cookie Trays!,

A great book, one I might not have found out about were it not for my cookbook-fiend friend who spotted this in the Jessica's Biscuit catalog. So I ordered it and am so pleased. Here are some of my favorites that are truly exceptional cookies:
*Blackberry Cheesecake Bars *Chocolate Truffle Bars (author recommends using sugar dough, but seeing as I am a chocoalte fanatic, I made them with choc. chip dough) *Madeleines (yes! easy and so good. Kept well, too) *Toffee Apple Drop Cookies (outstanding--you make them by adding toffee bits and dried apples to sugar dough. I dipped one end in melted choc as recommended and gave them as a gift. Huge hit so I made them for myself, too.) *Cookie Tiramisu *Peppermint Snowdrops *Frosted Double Apricot Cookies (HEAVENLY!!!!!!) As mentioned above, I am so looking forward to adding these new favorites to my Christmas cookie gift plates. This is a wonderful cookbook all around--a rare gem!

Well used, very well liked,

This is a cookbook I really do use--a lot. I like some of the very easiest recipes in here, especially the variations on the chocolate chip cookies. They really taste unique. A friend of a friend who worked as a pstry chef thought the peppery ginger chocolate chip cookies (they have cryst. ginger and pepper mixed in) were brilliant and wanted the recipe--thy're that good. Smart ideas, smart book, worth the money.

Great idea--a treasure for cookie lovers pressed for time,

This cookbook is a real treasure. The recipes are delicious, the writing is friendly and reassuring, and the directions are easy to follow. I strongly urge new bakers, in particular, to give this one a try-you can make some wonderful recipes without being intimidated. One of my new favorite cookies has only three ingredients (chocolate chip raisin cookies laced with cinnamon). I bought one tube of dough (on sale for $1.89) since I already have raisins and cinnamon-in short time I had about 2 and 1/2 dozen cookies that tasted better than what I could buy at my local coffeehouse. And the house smelled wonderful, too.I agree with a previous reviewer that this could be a fun one for kids-just finished ordering copies for my godchildren who are getting curious about baking. Another thing that I am excited about with this book, and is something that the other reviewers have not mentioned, is that it is good for people who live solo (or perhaps empty nesters or other couples) who do not want to be tempted by having dozens and dozens of cookies around the house. I gave the book to a dear friend shortly after receiving mine (she still likes to do some occasional baking) because I know that she buys the tubes of cookie dough on occasion to satisfy her sweet tooth. She is thrilled with the book and has already made HALF batches of two of the recipes (don't have to worry about halving the leavening as you might if making from scratch). I have quite a few tried and true cookie recipes that I will certainly continue to bake, but I am tickled with this cookbook and the thought that I can still get my cookie fix when I'm feeling a bit lazy. What fun!

A lovely book for all levels of baking,
By Delia Frederick (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cookie Dough Delights: More Than 150 Foolproof Recipes for Cookies, Bars and Other Treats Made with Refrigerated Cookie Dough (Paperback)
I found out about this book word of mouth and so glad that I did. Down to earth, friendly writing, delicious and modern-sounding recipes (e.g., big flavors--e.g., ginger, citrus, blackberry, chocolate, caramel) but minimal steps and ingredients. I really appreciate this book (I'm an occasional baker)--I'm not looking to become a pastry chef, but when I make cookies I want them to be delicious and different. I have a number of cookie baking books and honestly they have the exact same recipes that I've seen for the past 20 years. That's fine, but it's wonderful to find such interesting new combinations in a book that's quick and easy, too--best of both worlds. And yes, have tried several recipes thus far. Made the madeleines and cardamom currant tea cookies and also the apple crumble from the dessert section. Winners. Will be spreading the word to friends and family.

I'm going to stay in the same theme as the recipes and keep it simple: I love this cookbook. If you, too, are a cookie monster (or partner or children), you'll love it too.

Best Cookie Book/ Kids and Adults,
By Cookie Mom-ster (Springfield, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cookie Dough Delights: More Than 150 Foolproof Recipes for Cookies, Bars and Other Treats Made with Refrigerated Cookie Dough (Paperback)
This is a great book, I love it and have used it a lot already. I bought it especially based on reviews for fun kid ideas. I followed the directions for the cookie bouquets for my daughter's 6th birthday party (Made a dozen cookies on sticks for "flowers" for each of the little girls using the pre-made sugar cookie dough (easy--used extra long popsicle sticks from craft store) and then they decorated them using frosting, chocolate and candy ideas from the book--put them in bud vases to finish and they tied on the ribbons of their choice). This was the best party idea for little girls ever--not only was it the main activity (they were completely absorbed in what they were doing for 2 hours, squirting icing and laughing) but made wonderful take-home favors , too. And the "bouquets" were adorable in the end.
But most of the book is filled with excellent "adult" cookies. The raspberry cookie tarts, espresso cheescake bars and baklava thumbprints all came out beautifully and so delicious, as did the lemon poppyseed tart with fresh berries. Like the Midwest reviewer mentioned, the frosting chapter is great, too. This has some of the best new flavor combinations that are still accessible to the everyday home baker. Will be great for holiday cookie trays! |
