5.0 out of 5 stars Cookie Sensations lives up to its name. February 8, 2007
Format:Paperback
This is a great book about decorated cookies. It is easily read and understood and the technique can be completed by a beginner to intermediate cake/cookie decorator. The book includes a nice history of cookies and cutters and includes alot of illustrations through out. She lists a nice selection of suppliers and several delicious receipes for cookies and icings. There is a full page listing of color combinations, helping even a beginner decorator make lots of lovely shades of icings. She also includes a graduated color guide to help newbies and has a color chart page that gives you an idea of which colors look best together including a break down of when using a certain color for the outlines, what colors work best for the fill-in. The book also includes many cookie styles for birthdays to wedding, holidays to baby showers along with detailed instructions, photos and templates in case you don't have the cutter used or don't want to purchase one. The fill in method is not the color flow method as you can still see the lines where the icing was piped in, but if you chose to using the color flow method it would work well with these designs. I usually use the flow method myself but after seeing this more textured look, I have been incorporating it into my decorating and am finding the customers really like the look of them. It adds alot of visual interest to the cookie instead of it being just flat. I have also mixed the flow method and the textured method of this book together and it really works well together (ie.. flow method face and textured method clothing). All in all a great book for lot of fun ideas and a great deal for the price. I recommend this to any cake/cookie decorating library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Color chart very helpful April 1, 2008
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book last year when I was strugging to come up with color schemes for my cookies. The book contains a section on mixing colors and how to coordinate a palette that's invaluable. In fact, I pull out this book everytime I make cookies to get my colors right. I also think her idea of adding vegetable shortening to royal icing to get a creamier texture is brilliant. It does make for a "bumpier" surface but the tradeoff in mouthfeel is worth it. I'm all for cookies that taste good -- not cookies that only look perfect. I don't think that this one book contains all that a cookie baker will want to know about the craft, but I think it's a very good addition to have to your personal reference library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and fun to do with kids April 4, 2007

Format:Paperback
This book is GREAT, AWESOME, FABULOUS, FANTASTIC!!! I just can't say enough!!

I am a stay at home mom always looking for some new activities to do. I have never baked anything but choclate chip cookies and cupcakes from a box, and I wanted to try something new even though I am a bit challenged in the kitchen. :-)

This book outlines everything you need to get started and even tells you where you can find your "equipment". At no time did I feel overwhelmed in getting started.

My 4 year old son and I, plus my neighbor and her kids (6yrs & 14yrs) had the best time decorating our Easter cookies. The kids especially enjoyed eating the last of the icing from the icing bags!! This is a great activity to pass a rainy day or cold afternoon stuck inside. My cookies didn't look like the author's, but I could see I was getting better at decorating with each cookie I did. I can't wait to bake some more!!
