A very gentle, warm book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Cookie-store Cat (Scholastic Press) (Hardcover)
My children and I love all of Cynthia Rylant's picture books and early readers and we have particularly enjoyed the sweet illustrations and the warmth of this gentle story again and again. The previous reviewer mentioned the recipes at the end of the book. My kids and I have tried two of them (the cinnamon sugar plums and the frosty fruit squares) and they were very successful. My younger daughter gets a kick out of reading the book now and hearing the names of the cookies we've made. I love the rhythm of Rylant's words and the warmth and security she presents without making her stories sappy. This is a great book for the 4-6 age range. I would highly recommend it.

Sweet dream of a book,

This review is from: Cookie-store Cat (Scholastic Press) (Hardcover)
My children, 5 and 6, love this book. We checked it out so many times from the library I finally had to buy it so other children could enjoy it. While my children liked the images of a cat's peaceful and safe life (and the cookies), I liked the book because it reinforces the message of showing kindness to animals. The bakers' kindness and humanity towards the cat and children is a message which can never be repeated too often. We also liked the cookie recipes at the back of the book.

Simply drawn and a cozy story about an adopted stray cat.,
This review is from: Cookie-store Cat (Scholastic Press) (Hardcover)
My 3 year old loves this story. I think it's my husband's favorite too! While the pictures are simple, they work for the story. The pages are bright and colorful. The story is about an old cookie baker who adopts a stray cat. This cozy cat is loved by the whole town, from the old man who found the cat, to the man at the fish store and the children who stop in and let him lick the milk drops from their fingers. It gives you a warm fuzzy feeling which is perfect for bedtime!!!

The cookie cat and the bakers,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cookie-store Cat (Scholastic Press) (Hardcover)
This book is about a cookie-store and bakers. It was night and the baker looked and saw a kitten. The bakers bought the kitten a bag of cat food, a little gray bed and a white dish that said Kitty on it. The bakers decided to keep the kitten. This book uses really good and amazing pictures by Cynthia Rylant. I think if you are 5 or older you would really like this book.

This is one of my daughter's favorite books because of the colorful and lively illustrations, Ms. Rylant's flowing story line, and of course the recipes in the back of the book are a treat. I love the book because it teaches children to be kind to animals. It is a lovely story of a kitten who found the perfect home.

Nice story,

This review is from: Cookie-store Cat (Scholastic Press) (Hardcover)
I just love Cynthia Rylant's work. My children (ages 5 and 7) have enjoyed her books, especially the Henry and Mudge series and Mr. Putter series for several years already. This is a very sweet book and my children did enjoy it. It combined two of my children's favorite things -- treats and cats. And it's a nice touch that the recipes for the cookies mentioned in the book are given in the back (though I haven't tried them). Cynthia has a wonderful way with prose. But my kids didn't LOVE this book and I think it is because of the illustrations. This is one of the first books that Ms. Rylant has illustrated herself and, to be honest, it's not her strong suit. Another illustrator could have really enhanced the story much more.

Kind, sweet book with nothing scary,

This review is from: The Cookie-Store Cat (Paperback)
My 4-year-old son loves this book. He is a sensitive soul who doesn't like conflict. Stories that have mean characters, strife, sad events, and so on don't ever come off the bookshelf; however, this gentle book with all nice, kind characters works just fine for him. I like its "be nice to animals" message, as well as the cookie recipes in the back of the book. (We made the gumdrop gems, and grown-ups beware: while the cookie base is very good, the addition of gumdrops on top makes it definitely better suited for kids!)Overall, we love this book and would recommend it to any child who prefers gentle stories to more adventurous or exciting ones.

My daughter is 5 and starting Kindergarden in the fall. We're making our way through the school's recommended summer reading list and came to this. This has been my least favorite book so far. There's no real story and the illustrations are crude (but colourful). Also, I had to explain marzipan. The target audience in our house liked it OK, though. She asked to hear it twice and made me read the recipes in the back, too. The gingerbread men actually sound pretty good....

This is a very sweet story of a cat who is befriended by a cookie store baker. It sends a nice message about love and friendship. I really think it is suitable for children who are atleast 5 though, I read it to a class of 4 year olds and it is a little long for their age group.
