5.0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book, June 12, 2006
By
This is such a wonderful book. I was attracted to Jane Dyer's lovely illustrations and fell in love with the story. By using chocolate chip cookies, Rosenthal explains such things as envy, greed, cooperation, kindness, etc in a manner that helps children understand and gives adults a reason to smile. Today is my daughter's 6th birthday. Rather than take in treats that would be forgotten quickly, she gave her kindergarten teacher and class a copy of this book as a present. The teacher (and class) loved it. This book would be a wonderful present for a young child (say kindergarten to first grade) and a welcome addition to any libary. I cannot recommend it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is better than COOKIES?, May 15, 2006
This review is from: Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons (Library Binding)
My kids get this! Cookies is quickly becoming a favorite book at our house. Some of the words and concepts are difficult for kids to grasp, and admittedly not words that I work into daily conversation with my little ones. But having a book that so beautifully compares words like "modest", "fair", and "generous", with cookies makes sense to little minds. One of my favorite words is "open-minded". A bunny offers green cookies to a little girl and the captions reads, "I've never seen cookies like that before, but, uh, sure, I'll try one." A great lesson for adults too. This book has been a wonderful conversation starter with my children. But they always want to have a cookie after we read it!

Sweet ways of teaching the young ones the little lessons in life, ie: patience, respect, etc. Cute b/c the lesson always surrounds cookies. For patience, it's waiting for the cookies to be done. Respect, offer the first cookie to Grandma. Nice illustration too - images looks very "soft".

I bought this book for my husband who is known for baking the best tasting cookies in the small town where we live. The book is a delight to read and a great way to teach kids lessons such as sharing, patience, respect, trustworthiness, cooperation, compassion, etc. The illustrations are warm additions and you can almost smell the cookies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for all ages, November 29, 2006
By
My daughter is only 3, and we love this book. Together we read it and discuss the meanings of the words, to which she catches on quickly. The illustrations are beautiful and add immensely to the lessons on each page. We have reached our 'renew' limit at the library, and will now buy our own copy -- this is the type of book to hold onto and pass on. We will also buy a copy for her best friend this Christmas, it will make a great gift, much more lasting than a toy.

We love this book at our house. There is no plot, just a series of examples using cookies about what different words mean. A gentle lesson in ethics and vocabulary.

My four year old loves this book, and so do I. Since we love to bake on special occassions, the book seems a lot more comprehendable to my child. She compares her own experiences with the lessons in the book, and loves it. Great book, and makes a great gift!

I think I have purchased 15 copies of this book to give to my friends' and cousins' kids. For any one who loves to bake (or eat) cookies, this book provides a charming and fun way to talk about how we relate to each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars cookies are important, July 22, 2006
By
This is the kind of book that children of all ages should read, or have someone read to them. I love the way the book compares everyday words with cookies! The golden retriever on the front of the book is adorable, too. It's a very educational, creative and memorable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE ON EVERY CHILD'S BOOK SHELF, February 5, 2010
The author of this wonderful little book, Amy Krouse Rosenthal and the illustrator, Jane Dyer have used cookies, yes I said cookies, to teach children some very important life lessons. Actually, these life lessons all boil down to good manners, which in my opinion, is one of the most important lessons of all. Good manners will carry a child far in life and the sooner they learn these lessons the better.

Each page of this book addresses a new word or new term. Examples are modest, proud, respect, trustworthy, fair, unfair, compassionate, greedy, generous, polite, loyal, envy and so many others. A closer look at these examples would be: "Compassionate means, don't worry, its okay you can have part of my cookie," or "Respect means offering the very first cookie to your grandmother." "Cooperate means, how about you add the chips while I stir?" Each little line is a story within itself and each teaches a wonderful lesson. But that is not all folks!

The illustrations in this work are some of the best I have seen in recent years. The artist has used children interacting with anthropomorphized animals, much like those found in the work of Potter in dress, facial expressions and actions, to tell the story. The costumes of these various critters, rabbits, horses, dogs, bears, cats rabbits, and even frogs is absolute stunning and so very eye catching.

This work, published in 2006 brings a timeless message which is becoming more and more important everyday...i.e. good manners. It is an ideal book to read one on one with a child or to just hand the child and have them contemplate the message the author and illustrator is offering.

This is another of those works that should become a classic and should not be lost to the bottom shelves in the library or used book stores. It belongs on the shelf of a child's library and is one of those that should be passed from generation to generation. I was absolutely delighted to find this one in both our public library and our public school library and I am proud to report to you that they show signs of some very heavy reading. This encourages me.

Recommend this one highly.
