Book Description

November 1, 2001
Cookies 'n' Quilts features 8 original and complete quilt patterns plus brand-new recipes for 10 of the most temptingly decadent cookies and bars you have ever tasted.

The quilts involve the idea of superimposing one pattern over another. One quilt incorporates Maple Leaves into a Log Cabin block. Another strews flowers over an Irish Chain. Yet another builds a Virginia Reel from logs. And there are 3 star-within-a-star patterns.

The chocolate chip cookie recipe tries to answer the question of how many chips and how much butter can be packed into one cookie. The answer is apparently more than you ever thought possible! Among the cookies are an oatmeal spice cookie with cinnamon chips and a peanut butter cookie with chocolate and peanut butter chips. The bars are all different flavored brownie-like confections on a shortbread base.

Every quilt pattern includes color diagrams, rotary cutting instructions, and full-size templates. The recipes are thorough and easy to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, August 5, 2002

I am a beginning quilter, and this book has projects that I can do easily, plus others that will challenge my abilities, but also teach me new skills (such as set-in seams). I also appreciate how Judy Martin gives yardage in length and in fat quarters.
I am ordering a muffin top pan soon so that I can make many of the cookie recipes (lots of butter in these recipes, but yummy!)

4.0 out of 5 stars I love Judy Martin's work, January 30, 2002
This review is from: Cookies 'n' Quilts: Recipes & Patterns for America's Ultimate Comforts (Paperback)
Since I love Judy Martin's work, I knew I had to have this one. And indeed the quilts are quite lovely, even though not many new patterns in there if you have her other books. The quilts are based on the idea of superimposing a pattern over another, eg maple leafs on logcabin blocks. Judy Martin has done this before and the results are always wonderful. I already have decided to make a small wall hanging with the friendship star quilt for my new office.

I only gave the cookie part a passing glance. The cookies looked and sounded delicious, but I doubt I will make any. This is due to the difficulties to translate the American measurements (1 cup etc) to something my German tools will measure. But then I just might play around with it till it works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ths book is just okay, February 27, 2003

This review is from: Cookies 'n' Quilts: Recipes & Patterns for America's Ultimate Comforts (Paperback)
First of all, I do not care for any of the cookie recipes in this book. I haven't made them all, but the ones I have tried were simply too rich - and yes, there is such a thing, at least to some tastes! Also, many of the recipes call for "unusual" ingredients or equipment such as cinnamon chips or a muffin-top pan, and these things may not be readily available to those who live in small towns or outside the US.
The quilt section, however, was better. Most of the quilts are lap or wall sized, with a couple of bed sized quilts thrown in. Some are appropriate for an advanced beginner, while others require a certain amount of experience. They all have a more or less "scrappy" look to them. They are all nice quilts, though I don't think any of them are really outstanding. There is only one quilt, a log cabin variation, that I actually plan on making. One thing I really do like about this book, however, is that the fabric requirements are given in both yardage and fat quarters. I have the feeling that if you want to replicate the look of the quilts in the book, you would use fat quarters.
This is a perfectly respectable book, and certainly nice to have if you collect quilting books. But if you plan on choosing only a few excellent books, I would try to find something different.
