Grade 4-6–These British imports open with a brief introduction to the specific civilization and then describe the foods that were available to its people, explain how they were prepared and eaten, and examine each culture's food-related rituals. They also provide about six recipes that have been adapted for use with modern ingredients. Most of them require fairly advanced preparation and cooking skills such as chopping and broiling, and safety warnings are minimal. The elementary reading levels and topic coverage and the more advanced skill levels of the recipes are not well matched, which will limit the books' audience.

Clive Gifford is an award-winning author of over 120 books for children and adults. These range from the serious (Refugees, Robots, Planet Under Pressure: Pollution, Spies and Spying) and sporty (with books on the Olympics, football and tennis) to the downright silly (Pants Attack, Kelly's Smelly Wellies, The Huge Rude Duke).
