Quick! Find anything that rhymes and put it in the book.,

I didn't like this book at all. The only positive thing about it is the repetition. My kids learned the words because they see them over and over in the book, but the book itself is poorly written. The story started to get vague by page 9, "Which tin will win?" My son wanted to know what the tins were competing for. By the time we got to page 14, the sentences were short and didn't make much sense to the kids. Page 15 was too confusing to explain to a 3 and 5 year old --->"Hot shot into the pot. A pot shot! (Not so hot!)". Long story short,my 5-year old wanted to know what a pot had to do with a pot shot (since the book was about cooking)and why it is called POT shot if you don't use a real pot in the process...sigh. Writing books in rhyme is not easy, and this book is a good example of when a writer tries to make something work no matter what. The rhymes are there but the story just becomes too abstract for level 1 readers to catch on by themselves. My 5 and 3 year old can read other level 1 books on their own and actually understand the stories. This book is just a flop.

silly little book,
This review is from: Cooking With the Cat (The Cat in the Hat: Step Into Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
No, it doesn't always make sense, as some reviewers pointed out. But does it need to? It's the Cat in the Hat; it's supposed to be silly and nonsensical. My almost-5-year-old thought it was funny (though he likes silly things that don't necessarily make sense). It's simple enough that he can read it by himself with just a little help from me on some harder words.
Cute book; goofy kids will like it. Those who want to understand and make sense of everything, probably won't.

I just bought this book for my 5 year old daughter who is just learning how to read . It has nice easy words for her to sound out and she is very excited that she is able to read it . It has very bright and colorful pictures that are nice to look at.

great first reader,
This review is from: Cooking With the Cat (The Cat in the Hat: Step Into Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
Familiar, beloved character with rhyming words, primarily short vowel sounds and simple letter combinations make this a success story for an emerging reader. An easy step and addition to Bob books and Step into Reading boxed sets. Colored pictures were a big hit!

EXCELLENT book for new readers!!,
This review is from: Cooking With the Cat (The Cat in the Hat: Step Into Reading, Step 1) (Paperback)
This book combines two of my daughter's loves -- cooking and reading -- with the classic Dr. Seuss character, Cat in the Hat. As a Step 1 book in the Step Into Reading series, this book's format is designed to encourage beginning readers. The rhyming text and clear font make it perfect for learning and reviewing phonetic combinations. My daughter could read it by herself within two days! Of course, the Seussical illustrations make this book a hit with everyone whether read by or to the kids.
Please note this book was neither written nor illustrated by Dr. Seuss. The author and illustrator, however, did a wonderful job! I couldn't tell the difference. My kids love it!

It's silly, I agree with the other readers about just putting anything that rhymes together without making much sense, but I put my own spin when I read it to my son (pointing out aprons, brooms, don't touch the oven, alarm clock, mixer, no standing on stool etc etc) and he seems to like it (he's a little over 2). You can make lots of fun stories by using your imagination but the book in itself is not that great.

You know, I think opinions of this book all depend on the kid and what he/she likes. My 3 year old cannot get enough of this book, but he likes books with rhymes. I would like to add that he is currently not fond of the other cat in the hat books we have introduced. I think it might have something to do with complexity and attention span. It does seem that the flow is a little broken at times, however the words that rhyme are fun to say, the book is short, and the illustrations are simple. Overall, I know that if my son could rate this book, it would be 5 stars.

Poorly written. Just throwing in words to rhyme. My 5-year old daughter had to take the reader test online and every time I give this to her, she will make up excuses "I want the other one" or "I don't want that".

This is one of my grandson's favorite books. I've read it to him from the time he was born.

I bought this along with several other Step into Reading Books level 1 for our Kindergarten library.
Unfortunately, I have to say that this is the worst of the lot. From trying to explain what "glop" is to no sense whatsoever on what they are cooking (Ham and jam?) The kids didn't like it at all in spite of the fact that they love Cat in the Hat. On the other hand, "Jack and Jill and his big dog Bill" and "Mouse makes Words" are already favorites. |
