This book offers plenty of recipes; but for me, it was more about inspiring readers to be creative and inventive in the kitchen. The recipes are based on a philosophy of using locally grown, organic and unprocessed foods. But unlike many other cookbooks I've encountered, this one is not designed to make you feel guilty or inferior. Rather than being preachy, this book is delightful and entertaining, written by a real person with a real family and real food challenges. It's like reading an email from your best friend. Even if you never cook, it's worth much more than $3 just for the pleasure of reading it.

A funny, engaging, quick read that includes many interesting (and healthy) recipes. I enjoyed reading it purely for its entertainment value, but may just have to incorporate some of these recipes into my own picky preschooler's menu. The writing captures what it's like to cook for your children while trying to consider their health, environmental concerns, allergies, and the general quirkiness of kids. I appreciate the author's tongue in cheek, down to earth manner, not to mention her acknowledgment that sometimes, you just gotta order takeout.

For a sustainable living cookbook, this is a very fun read, on a couple different levels. On the one hand it is a cookbook for cooking without BPA, processed sugar, white flour, soy, or any non-local non-organic ingredients, on the other hand, as her funny stories between recipes attest, it makes clear the near impossibility of really living up to this ideal in corn syrup drenched America, with delicious Chinese food always just a phone call away. On the gripping hand though, in the end she shares the rich rewards from getting most of the way there: from fresh vegetables from your local farm, to the satisfaction of making your own bread with your children.

I am a long-time reader of Emily's writing, and I was thrilled when she mentioned that she had published this little gem. Those wanting a "Gooseberry Patch" type of experience will not find it here, (although "Insanity" does have its own share of sweet moments); however, that is one of the things I enjoyed most about this book. It's unconventional and smart, yet with a friendly, easy tone. It is, by turns, a rallying cry to more natural eating, a collection of Emily's healthy recipes that even her pickiest eater will chow down on (check out her homemade tortilla recipe), and an honest, open and often slyly hilarious family memoir. It defies the traditional cookbook genre quite wonderfully, I believe. I found "Cooking At the Edge of Insanity" delightful, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great read and some great food at the same time.
