4.0 out of 5 stars Spice up your meals with "Cooking with Flavor"!, September 19, 2007
This review is from: Cooking with Flavor: Spice Up Your Everday Favorites (Hardcover)
Moist, melt in your mouth "Red Velvet Cake with Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting" need I say more! How about "Spicy White Bean & Chicken Chili", "Field Greens with Oranges, Strawberries and Vanilla Vinaigrette" or "Caribbean Shrimp Bruschetta". These are just a few of the recipes that caught my eye in McCormick's, "Cooking with Flavor" coobook.

The 176 hardcover book is divided into sections: Breakfast & Brunch, Main Dishes, Appetizers, Side Dishes & Salads, Grilling, Holiday, Desserts and The Enspicelopedia. Each dish includes a mouth watering full color photograph.

There is a LOT to LOVE in this cookbook. The dishes are easy to prepare, quick to prep for (from 5-20 minutes) and have easy to find ingredients.
These are simple, classic family favorite recipes punched up with McCormick's flavors. (0ne of my very favorite flavors is McCormick's pure vanilla extract which has been a staple in my home since I was a little girl. I was delighted to see some incredibly easy and tasty deserts in this book using my favorite vanilla from "Easy Lemon Mousse" to "Summer Fruit Tart").

The back of the book includes "The Enspicelopedia" which gives a pictorial lesson on many different spices with a description, flavor, aroma profile and uses.

For an added touch the book includes a red ribbon to hold your place and the wider style of the binding allows it to lay flat for ease of use.

The one drawback (and hence 4 stars not 5) is the book does not include nutritional information. No calorie counts, sodium etc.

This is a book I will use for years. I love the classic, tasty dishes, natural ingredients and ease of use. Definitely a keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars The world of spices is yours, take it, October 1, 2007
This review is from: Cooking with Flavor: Spice Up Your Everday Favorites (Hardcover)
I love cookbooks, I do. There is nothing better than knowing that I have a treasure chest, literally on my shelf from which I can pull out delectable ideas that can be prepared and eaten. This beautiful hardcover book is truly a treasure on my shelf, not only rich in information but chock full of interesting and user friendly recipes that not only taste good once made but also ones that are interesting enough for me to come back and open this book again. With the many cookbooks I own some don't get used more than once, in the past two weeks that I had this book it was used at least a dozen times, something that has never happened to me before.

The breakdown of this book is as follows: Breakfast & Brunch, Appetizers, Main Dishes, Side Dishes & Salads, Grilling, Desserts, Holiday and the Enspiceclopedia that thoroughly goes over herbs and spices with detailed pictures and very useful information.

I adore the main idea behind this book, to train our palates. How many days pass by when many of us eat bland boring food that we pick up on the whim, things that might as well taste like cardboard but merely fill our growling tummies so that we can sleep at night? This book really uses spices to add a whole dimension of flavor, layered with easy to learn techniques. Cooking doesn't have to be a chore, a short stop at the store and a handful of items at the pantry guarantee a hot meal or a tasty luscious breakfast in very little time.

Each recipe in this book uses some kind of spice or condiment, from warm Earthy cinnamon in Blueberry muffins to cool celery salt in Creamy Dill Dip to a colorful mélange of peppers and garlic in home made Italian Bread Dipping Oil. There is a wonderful recipe for Rosemary Roasted Chicken, and I must admit this was my first time roasting one, I am ready to do it again! This book has very short lists of ingredients needed, I can whip up half these meals with very little shopping involved. The style of food is mixed, contemporary American with few European twists, basically an easy to please fare. The desserts here are also quite nice, and extremely easy, I was baking with my little sis in no time, and usually she's satisfied with helping and doesn't care to eat my creations, she loved the Molten Cakes that oozed chocolate, so we burned out tongues because we wouldn't wait, that's pretty much the worst thing that could happen when using this book.

This book is really easy to use, short on ingredients and each recipe has it's own colorful page so you don't have to imagine what the food could look like. I can't wait to make all of the recipes, they look fun and are easy to eat and enjoy. This is a really helpful tool in the kitchen, especially for those who make the same old boring dinner again and again. Change is easy, all we need is a little inspiration and McCormick wrapped it all up in a nice little book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cooking with Flavor, January 12, 2008

This is a great cookbook. The recipes are easy,
few, everyday ingredients, and no long, complicated
instructions.
The only thing that would make it perfect is
if it were spiral bound so it would lay open
when using.
