I learned much of what I know about cooking from this wonderful little cookbook and worn out two paperback copies over 30 years. (#2 is held together with rubberbands. I won't part with it until I have my hands on a couple of back-up copies.)

I'd been looking for a book about cooking with herbs and spices, and this is the one I found. It has excellent descriptions of which herbs and spices go with specific foods... exactly what I wanted.

My mother-in-law had a copy of this book in hardcover. I was immediately drawn to the illustrations in black and white of each herb and spice you can imagine. This book gives anywhere from one to a dozen recipes for a specific spice or herb. I tried the Cabbage with Capers last night and my husband said it was one of the best things I've made in a while! I wouldn't call this "American" or "French" per se, it's just simple recipes to give you ideas on the versatility of those little plants and jars in your kitchen. I also like the descriptions, they give times-past associations of spices with prosperity, luck, love, and hate! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because there are a couple herbs or spices with a single recipe, I wanted more. Otherwise this is a great find!

I have over 20 cook books so far, this one will be pulled off the shelf many times.

I love this book. It's small enough and has some of the best dishes I've ever cooked put forth. I love the cornbread and I used the sage dressing recipe every single year!!
