3.0 out of 5 stars No Longer about 'Light Cooking' November 23, 2010
By Jodie
I've been receiving Cooking Light Magazine for about 8 years now. It was my Bible. I cook from scratch A LOT and everyone knew that every single, solitary recipe I made came from Cooking Light...until now. Over the course of the last year the magazine took a turn for the worse when it comes to providing good, solid, HEALTHY recipes! Healthy, Light...that is the point of the magazine, isn't it? I can find recipes in every other cookbook out there that have dinners with 15+ grams of fat for one small serving! For instance, in the most recent Dec 2010 edition there is a Truffled Wild Mushroom lasagna. Sounds delish, right? Well, why wouldn't it be when one small serving has 424 calorie and 18g of fat!

And in an effort to include different types of foods, there is often page after page of obsecure recipes that ask for items that are very expensive and hard to find (and I live in Chicago next to the country's largest Whole Foods!)

If you are interested in 'cooking light' may I suggest the magazine 'Healthy Cooking'. I've only received 2 magazines so far but seriously folded over nearly every page in the magazines indicating the recipes I want to try!

3.0 out of 5 stars What happened to my favorite magazine? January 11, 2011

I subscribed to Cooking Light for almost ten years, and thought the magazine was fantastic. I loved that the recipes were healthy and delicious at the same time, and I would try at least two or three dishes from every issue. Every single recipe I tried turned out great. I even bought gift subscriptions for friends and family.

Then everything changed. Cooking Light became far more of a lifestyle magazine and far less of a cooking magazine. I tolerated this up to a point, until I realized there were fewer recipes that appealed to me in each issue, and the ones I did make were disappointing at best. The complete design overhaul was the last straw - half the time, I can't tell the recipes from the ads anymore!

When my subscription ran out a couple of months ago, I didn't even consider renewing it. If Cooking Light ever returns to what it used to be, I'll be among the first to sign up. Until then, I'll spend my money on magazines that actually focus on food.

I was a loyal CL reader for years. Loved the magazines and the books. However, I recently renewed my subscription for 2 years, only to find that I didn't receive the first 3 issues. I contacted Cooking Light customer service over and over again, and my subscription was never extended, replacement issues sent, etc... On my most recent contact with customer service, I said I would like to just cancel my subscription if nothing is done, and got a reply back today that they were refunding my credit card. Awesome customer service! Instead of fixing the issue, just cancel the subscription so customers go and tell all their friends and family how terrible the experience was :-)
Sadly, I won't be reading CL anymore. If you subscribe, check your issues and make sure you are getting everything you paid for...

5.0 out of 5 stars healthy creative and delicious! November 6, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I am so glad I started subscribing to this magazine last year. I love fancy food and get bored easily, but also try to eat healthy without sacrificing taste. This magazine does just that. It is packed full of beautiful pictures, the recipies are easy to follow, and it gives you all the nutritional info you need. It also is not comprised of lots of adds like some of the other healthy magazines I have come across. I recommened it to all, and always feel like I am opening a gift when it comes in:-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not always so light... April 28, 2011
By Scave31
I'm not a great cook and don't usually spend a lot of time in the kitchen, but I've been trying to eat healthier and fresher. There's a lot that's good about Cooking Light...however it's not always light, and it seems to me that a lot of the recipes, while delicious, are really way more complicated than they need to be. Maybe that's just me. I do like a lot of the articles and the nutritional information included, but wish they would really focus on the "light" part of the title more.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's great....but.... December 9, 2011
By K. CD
I love Cooking Light, it is the only magazine I subscribe to on a regular basis and have done so for years. It is not 90% ads like some mags and it has great recipes. What I love about their recipes is that they are light and tasty! I have made hundreds of their recipes over the years and have never been disappointed. The only reason they get 4 stars instead of 5 is you can get all their recipes on their website for free, if I am paying for a magazine I would like to get some recipes that maybe are not posted for free online. So overall I get it because I like the hard copy in hand and it encourages me to try a new dish out each month out of the magazine when I get it in the mail.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cooking Magazine October 7, 2011
Cooking Light is the first cooking magazine I've purchased where my wife or I have actually cooked an item out of almost every issue.

As others have noted, the recipes don't seem to be the lightest cooking one can do, but I look at it from the point of view that all of the recipes are lighter than their traditional counterparts. I am also largely fond of their focus at times on specific ingredients, especially vegetables and meats that I don't always think to use but can provide a healthy option.

The other fantastic thing is that the recipes are very practical. They always have a section for quick meals (less than 30 minutes) and for lower budget meals. Those tend to be great and help out quite a bit in cutting down on fat and salt (as a runner I don't concern myself much with calories).

I am also the type of cook that looks for ideas and concepts rather than sticking hard and fast to a recipe, and I love how this magazine can inspire ideas. If you aren't horribly concerned with light cooking, you can always pick and choose ingredients to suit your tastes. I also find that ideas work well in my own personal recipes to make them healthier.

Last, I love that the magazine will usually include a nice recipe index. It makes it easy to find recipes by type of general ingredient. It's great when I'm looking for a quick salad or side dish to serve with a meal.

An example of one recent recipe my wife and I liked involved the use of making macaroni and cheese using squash as the thickening agent instead of flour and cream. It probably isn't the biggest improvement in terms of fat and calories, but the value comes in the added use of vegetables and the vitamins they provide. It was delicious.
