Editorial Reviews

Review

"I believe family meals are one of the most important traditions you can pass along to your children. As a chef, and devoted father, I applaud Amanda's insight and dedication to her passion - One Family One Meal. Her thoughtful inclusion of the entire family in not only the meal itself, but preparation of the meal is so valuable and truly brings the joys of family, cooking and eating full circle." (Michael Mina, Chef, Restaurateur and Author of MICHAEL MINA: The Cookbook, father of 2 2012-01-00)

"Amanda's passion for feeding children well is unparalleled. She believes that giving kids real food - and making food a centerpiece of family life - is an enriching experience for kids and parents alike. One Family One Meal is timely, and the tools Amanda masterfully provides are both handy and creative." (Kirsten Tobey, Founder and Chief Innovation Officer, Revolution Foods, mother of 2 2012-01-00)

"The greatest joy of cooking is gathering around the table and sharing a home-cooked meal with your family and loved ones. I love Amanda's motto of One Family One Meal, because as a chef and parent myself, that's what I believe in, and Amanda has definitely mastered mealtime with modern food for the modern family in this cookbook! Her recipes are simple and delicious, without sacrificing flavor or fun, and most importantly, they're healthy and nutritious for the whole family." (Todd English, James Beard Award-Winning Chef, Restaurateur and Author of Cooking in Everyday English, father of 3 2012-01-00)

As a working mom to two kids, ages 6 and 3, I need help with making dinnertime run smoothly and offering meals that we all will eat, which are cheap, healthy, wholesome, fun, and varied. I subscribe to Amanda's online menu planner, One Family One Meal, and so I pre-ordered my copy of Real Family Food a while back. When it arrived two days ago I was so excited.

First, this book is good looking. Beautiful photos grace every page. The table of contents isn't made up of a list of words; it is four pages of little photos so the kids can pick out what they feel like!

Here is what happened:
My kids poured over the book when I showed it to them. Then my 6 year old son asked how he could mark the pages. I offered him strips of torn notebook paper. He marked so many pages that he kept running out of paper! That night, we read the book like a bedtime story. His jaw dropped when he saw the peanut butter panini with chocolate drizzle!

So last night, we made the Strawberry Agua Fresca drink and BBQ chicken sandwiches and coleslaw for dinner. The kids helped me every step of the way. In the middle of the preparations, my son exclaimed, "We can throw away ever other cooking book!" !!!!! And also, "I'm getting very worked up over this!" He was so excited that he decided he needed to run in the backyard to pick flowers for the table! Holy cow! Last night's dinner was one of the most excited and fun meals our family has ever shared. I am thrilled.

Today, he was already looking through the pictures again and tearing slips of paper!

Frankly, this is the best family cookbook I have ever seen. Others tend to be filled with fast, but rather unpalatable offerings more geared for kids than foodie parents. This strikes a nice balance.
I love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best. Ever. March 2, 2013

Bought this as a resource for both a healthier lifestyle and in hope of transitioning our baby to HEALTHY table food instead of junk. Guess what? Every recipe is delicious and a hit. Our daughter, now 17 months, enjoys the pizza with grilled onions on it and the pasta with fast tomato sauce. The pumpkin muffins are divine and a wholesome family fave (toss in some shredded carrots and no one notices!). Cannot recommend this highly enough. Every recipe is yummy. I work full time and these are easy enough to make on a weeknight in 30 to 45 min. and know you're nourishing your family.

What a great book for ALL mom's who are trying to get organized and reinvent "meal time." Real Family Food is a great bible for all of us who need a little help getting ourselves organized. I always say you can do anything with a plan and this is THE PLAN for simplyfying the drudgery that can be family meals. I love the organization of the book, especially the checklists which include The Real Family Food Pantry as well as Amanda's favorite tools. I also like how the recipes are easily identifiable with the colored icons as gluten free, dairy free, Vegan, Easy Entertaining, Make Ahead and 15 minutes or less. But what I like the most about this book is that it's real; you don't see an overly styled dinner table with a perfect family when it's just you and your kids. That makes me feel like I can achieve all of this. Lastly, the recipes are not overly complicated so if your kids don't like these meals....You've got bigger problems! I'm going to get this book for a lot of my mom friends who are constantly complaining about meal time. Time to get cooking!
Thanks Amanda, keep 'em coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best family cookbooks ever! November 15, 2012
By Sarah F
Format:Paperback
I bought this when I was home in the US in the hopes that it would a)work well with my Weight Watchers' ambitions and b)finally be a solution to the complaints of my teenagers about dinner. I have four kids and work full time, and this book is by far the best one I own -- and I own a lot of cookbooks -- when it comes to cooking a meal that the whole family will eat. The little ones and the big ones love everything we've made, and they were fighting over the leftovers! I asked the older two to make a list of things they want me to cook from the book, and they both filled a page. I can't say enough good about this book.

I have triplet 6-yr-old boys who are NOT the best eaters...I also love to cook...my pantry is full of cookbooks. I have followed the author's website at One Family, One Meal for a year and have really appreciated her approach and enjoyed using recipes from the site. Needless to say I was thrilled when this cookbook became available! The pictures make the food come to life and are especially exciting for my kids. They have sat at the table 'reading' the cookbook and picking out recipes from the day it arrived. In fact, the cookbook sits in the middle of our table when I'm not using it in the kitchen! Last week alone my kids ate Indian-inspired food (the chicken mango wraps), Italian food (the turkey lasagna), Thai food (the Thai chicken bowl) and I used her delicious lime vinaigrette to marinate chicken for fajitas. I NEVER would have imagined my kids eating that kind of variety in a single week. This book is a savior to me and to my kids and it is so well priced! The satisfaction I get from being able to make yummy homemade meals my whole family will eat is priceless. Everyone with children under the age of 18 should have a copy of this book and use it regularly!!
