Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In 2001, Bauer's 90/10 Weight-Loss Plan told readers that they could shed pounds if they ate healthy food 90% of the time and "fun food" 10% of the time. About half of that book was devoted to actual recipes; this follow-up volume is almost all recipes. Appropriately, about 90% of the book is devoted to health-conscious dishes, which often call for skinless chicken breasts, fat-free sour cream, lots of vegetables and other low-cal foods. The menus are low in dietary cholesterol and saturated fat, and high in fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Most recipes rely heavily on fresh ingredients and use only a few "reduced-fat" items. Among the winners are Shrimp with Garlic and Feta, Grilled Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Herb-Marinated Flank Steak. In the "Fun Food" section, Bauer presents desserts like Chocolate Chip Meringues and Strawberry-Topped Cheesecake as well as a few rich sides, such as Garlic Smashed Potatoes and Hot Artichoke Dip. Bauer believes that "learning to practice portion-controlled eating is the primary key to successful weight management," so all her recipes include carefully calculated serving sizes. Though many of these recipes are appealing, they'll be most appreciated by followers of the original 90/10 plan, since Bauer refers to it often and designs some menus around it, with intricate explanations of its various versions.

Great for the beginning cook! December 28, 2005
Format:Hardcover
I was a little intimidated when I saw the recipes, because some of them have a lot of ingredients. Well, a lot for me, who's more of a '4 ingredients or less' type of person. But they're explained really well, and the steps themselves are simple. The ingredients that I've encountered so far are simple to find, and the results are tasty, simple food. Some of the receipes might be a little too elementary for people who have a clue in the kitchen, but I really don't, so it helps me out a lot. Plus, there's a section for kid-friendly dishes, and another that puts together menus for 'fancy meals' with 2-3 dishes. They're a bit more exotic than the tuna salad and angel hair pasta picatta I've tackled thus far.

Oh, and before the section on recipes they have general cooking tips, which is really great. I really like the 'aisle-by-aisle' guide section. It helps to know how to properly store the fruits and veggies I get (and for how long), and what the different health aspects are to different types of fish or poultry or beef, or what different spices are typically used for.

So, for me, this was a great book. Now my only problem is I have so many leftovers piling up because I want to try everything!

Very happy with this book. January 11, 2004
By Robert
Format:Hardcover
To begin, I'm not a fan of cook books. But now that I'm older with children I really needed an approach to cooking that was fast, nutritional, and tasty. I'm not a gourmet chef but not clueless either. I've tried a few other books and found that over time I mostly abandoned each books approach and guidelines (a few recipes aside) for variety of reasons. But I did need help in the kitchen and wasn't afraid to try something new.

Selecting this book on a whim, I delighted to find a practical approach to meal preparation that meets my busy lifestyle. Better, the meals are truly tasty and healthy. Translation - less junk food for the family - less time in the kitchen - less griping at the dinner table. The writing is upbeat and easy to follow and easily referenced - pleasant to read.

I rarely write reviews this glowing but in this instance I feel it's been earned - kudos to the authors. This book is presents a great approach to food preparation that is healthy and tasty that fits the today's busy lifestyle. It works both for me and my family. I highly recommend.
