I've used cook'n since it came on the market and currently purchased Cook'n version 10. I can't say enough about the quality of this program. It just keeps getting better and better. Originally, I just wanted a place to keep all my recipes...then I wanted something to print me a shopping list..they do that. Then I wanted the nutrition of my recipes, especially the carbs since I'm diabetic. They do that. Then I wanted something that would go into all my cookbooks and find a recipe or maybe a recipe with naming only one ingredient, they did it , not only can I find the ingredient in the title, but it will search the recipes and find those witht that ingredient within. This program just keeps getting better. Now it also will go online and find the recipes!!

It is a snap to make your own cookbook,or perhaps a book for the family, church whatever! But now this version 10 blew my mind. I hate recopying the recipes I found the program will "capture" the recipe and "whamo" it is now part of one of my cookbooks.

You can plan all your weekly menues and pull off a shopping list when done. That list can include your product preferences if you so wish.

You can email recipes to friends. (They also have cool looking themes that add a nice touch.)

As for their cookbooks, I've purchased 11 of theirs so I guess that tells you that I find them very useful. I have diabetes and love the low carb book, the lite and healthy, and their cookn'for diabetes. All have great recipes with tons of extra helpful info.

The tech department at DVO is the finest I've come across. about 3 years ago I lost all my cookbooks when my computer crashed. They found them all and replaced them with a few simple downloads.

I researched recipe organizer software fairly heavily before choosing this one. But in the end, I probably chose the wrong one. I most likely should have gone with Living Cookbook, which is what I strongly considered before purchasing Cook'n.

The negatives:
1. Most importantly, THIS IS NOT THE SOFTWARE TO CHOOSE IF YOU GET A LOT OF YOUR RECIPES FROM BLOGS! The "capture" function of this software is extremely limited. If you want to obtain recipes from blogs, be prepared to enter them manually (which is extremely time consuming). Cook'n is good if you get most of your recipes from the bigger, mainstream sites like But forget about it if the recipe is from a blog. Living cookbook has a copy and paste function. Cook'n does NOT. Also, their online search is useless. I have found myself searching via google chrome and copying and pasting the address into the cook'n online search bar. It's tedious.

2. This program has crashed at least 15 times in the past week I have had it. Frustrating to say the least!

3. There are quirks that drive me crazy. It's impossible to make recipes appear the way I want it. I would prefer not to have a space before the comma after I enter things like, tomatoes, chopped. While this may seem nitpicky, it's just one more way this program has bugged me. It is not easy to change certain things.

4. The grocery list function is irritating because I have yet to discover a way to DELETE the items I do not need to purchase. You can check the "already have it" box, but you cannot delete it. So you are stuck with a long list with many things like sugar, flour, and cornstarch that you do not need to often purchase on a weekly basis.

I have been using this since version 8 and after reading most of the other reviews I thought I would step up and tell you my opinion about both the software and the support. First off we are a professional barbecue team and catering comany with literally thousands of recipes collected over the years from other teams and professional cooks and restaurants alike. Maintaining this list is daunting and unlike most people who are addicted to simply collecting recipes we need something to collect them and use to implement them for cooking. Cook N has done this well for us. We use it to alter recipe volumes based on the job on the fly. With a few key strokes we can change from a party of 12 to a huge party of 2500

The version 8 was a nice product and when 9 came out we were very excited to upgrade to it. The upgrade was not seamless thanks to issues NOT with the software but with the security issues built into Microsoft Windows. DVO knew about the issues when they built the software but in order to advance had to endure the issues. Lets face it with three MAJOR version of Windows (XP, Vista, W7) plus 30 or 40 semi iterations of each there is no way a cutting edge product can anticipate every issue and worse be equipped to handle all of them day one of the release. But within short order Dan (the CEO of DVO) had his tech support folks step in and get us working so we lost nothing but a few moments of time. I read some of the reviews that basically complained that things weren't solved in 5 minutes or less and therefore they felt that 1 star was a proper rating. I prefer to view things from the bigger picture as I think most people should. This is not like buying some object that once delivered can never be altered by the manufacturer again (air filter, flashlight, stereo system etc).
