5.0 out of 5 stars great for over a year
the bed has been great for my retriever. add the coldest water possible by using 2 or 3 gallon containers and putting them in the freezer until they start to develop a little ice on the surface and keep bed shaded. honestly i have not had any issues with the construction at all, and i have abused the hell out of it. seriously. i think it's great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Construction
This product is a mini-waterbed and it works on the same prinicpal as an unheated human sized waterbed. It wicks heat away from the source and distributes it evenly throughout the bed. This product is a mini-waterbed and it works on the same prinicpal as an unheated human sized waterbed. It wicks heat away from the source and distributes it evenly throughout the bed. Because the bed always maintains ambient room temperature, it cools down your pet effectively. However, it is EXTREMELY impractical. I think it takes 9 gallons of water if I remember correctly. A gallon of water weighs 8.33 lbs. So at capacity, the bed weighs about 75lbs. It is difficult to fill with water and, once full, impossible to move. I purchased the Cool Bed II for my 75lbs German Shepard two years ago. After just a year, it split at the seem, causing a bit of a mess. I sent it back to the manufacturer and they sent me a new one. After a couple of months, the second one split at the seam, in almost the same spot as the last one. Because the bed enclosure is lax, it is essentially dead weight. This is an important consideration when trying to empty the 75 lbs of water. If you can't move it, where are you supposed to empty its contents? The bed is a great concept. However, in my experience, the manufacturing is shoddy and eventually (within a year) the bed splits at the seem and is unrepairable.

3.0 out of 5 stars chewed, May 16, 2009
This review is from: Cool Bed III - Large Cooling, Cushioning Waterbed for your Dog (Misc.)
I was very pleased with this product until today. Iv had it about a month now. It is very cool and cool. My dog likes it and lays on it and it did not leak in the month I'v had it. How ever this morning I found it fliped half way over and my husky had pulled off the red stopper on the bottom and chewed it up and half the water in came out and into the carpet. I wish the stopper on the bottom was protected in some way so dogs could not get to it or pull it out. Then again its hard to protect anything against a husky. The bed does cool extreamly well and I liked the product more then I thought and so did my dog. I will try to get a new stopper and figure out how to cover it or maybe spray it with an anti chew scent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Agree with other reviewer on this - WAY too heavy to use, June 8, 2011

This review is from: Cool Bed III - Large Cooling, Cushioning Waterbed for your Dog (Misc.)
We had used a MEDIUM size Cool Bed a few years ago for our smaller (40 pound or so)female dog and it was FINE, so when she died and the new puppy chewed it, since he has now grown into a 60-pound dog, I ordered the LARGE. Like the other reviewer says, once you get that much water in that size one, it is simply unmovable -- a cleaner at our house bent the wire crate it was in,trying to move it, not realizing the crate now weighed about 100 pounds or so.

I called the place at least 3 times along the way, first asking is there something I need to know since the other one worked so well, and finally asking if I could just send this one back and get a Medium again and he can have his paws hanging over a bit. She wasn't going to make good on it at ALL until I said I will write a review for how this turns out; then she offered, if I sent it back for $27 UPS, to send me another LARGE, just like I have....makes no sense at all -- they could have kept the change b/t large and medium price, and we'd have all been happy.

So now we have a new LARGE, and I will put it in a flat place where I never have to move it EVER, certainly not in his crate which was the reason I bought it...he would wake up in the middle of the night panting. Instead I bought a Kool Koat for him, which works FINE for that occasion. No thanks to the Cool Bed folks.

5.0 out of 5 stars My dog won't sleep anywhere else, January 23, 2008
This review is from: Cool Bed III - Large Cooling, Cushioning Waterbed for your Dog (Misc.)
This is the best thing you can do for your dog, specially if he or she is arthritic or furry and always hot. I started with a medium one for my 30 pound Pom and now I bought him the king size and he's just loving it!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Good Idea but fails, September 7, 2009
This review is from: Cool Bed III - Large Cooling, Cushioning Waterbed for your Dog (Misc.)
I have the pet and the human version of this. It keeps you cool for about an hour, then the water in the pad becomes very hot and stays hot because of the internal foam. It then becomes a warmer rather than a cooler, as it feels like sleeping on a cup of hot tea.

I should also mention that black mold begins to form inside the pad. It never makes it from one summer to the next without black mold -- you can see it though the vinyl.

After a short time, it also begins to leak throught the stopper.

It's a shame because I am still looking a solution for both human and critter to this problem of being hot while sleeping in the hot summer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth it...please read before purchasing., July 11, 2009
This review is from: Cool Bed III - Large Cooling, Cushioning Waterbed for your Dog (Misc.)
I bought this bed hoping (at any cost) I could keep my boxer cool since she loves being outside all the time and doesn't know when to come in to take a break. Quite simply, the bed, regardless of technology claims, does nothing to keep it cool...all you're doing is adding the coldest tap water you can find into a poly sheath w/ a poly foam core to maintain the tap water temp as long as possible. The concrete on our porch actually retained the cool from evenings better than this bed did w/ tap water. I even tried to add a bunch of ice cubes once in hopes that as it melted at least the water temp would be lower...even that didn't work. Save your money!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Newfoundland loves this bed!!!, November 7, 2011

Sabrina Sadler (Bellingham, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cool Bed III - Large Cooling, Cushioning Waterbed for your Dog (Misc.)
I purchased this bed because my last dog loved the cool bed II-
I was worried because my Newfoundland is a puppy and likes to chew. The first night I got the bed she chewed a hole in it. However, I got a swimming pool patch kit and patched the hole with no problem. Other than that the bed is very sturdy. I move it all over the place because I'm vacuuming constantly. Before I got this bed I purchased a couple different VERY expensive beds but she wouldn't sleep any place else except the linoleum bathroom floor where it was cool. Now that we have the bed my Newfoundland sleeps on this bed all of the time. WE LOVE THE COOL BED III!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bear loved this!, October 18, 2011
This review is from: Cool Bed III - Large Cooling, Cushioning Waterbed for your Dog (Misc.)
I purchase the Cool Bed II first and had it about 2 years when the seam split however, when I was putting the water in the bed my son informed me I was putting in too much and I think that is probably what made it split. Anyway after that I immediately purchased another one when I discovered that now they had the Cool Bed III. I purchased one for my 165 lb. Newfoundland, and he layed on that bed for 4 years and loved it. He developed cancer and the night that he got bad we carried him to the bed which seemed to comfort him, after he died we got rid of the bed but if I should get another Newfy (which I will some day) I would not have one without the Cool Bed III. Thank you for a wonderful product.

2.0 out of 5 stars I bought two, May 18, 2011
This review is from: Cool Bed III - Large Cooling, Cushioning Waterbed for your Dog (Misc.)
I bought two of these and the sheets, and set up one for a trial run. I have had it six weeks and my dogs (5) don't go near it except to walk across it. One of my dogs peed on it with the sheet on it, so I removed the sheet. I would think one out of five dogs would like it, but not so far.
