Great little dark-humor, off-beat, insert-adjective-here kind of movie.., July 13, 2006
This review is from: Cool Blue [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Caught this on the IFC on cable the other night. Had never seen it, nor even heard of it, but when I saw who was in it (Woody Harrelson and, more importantly, Hank Azaria) I couldn't resist giving it a spin. So I started watching it. VERY 80's. But not bad. Just dated. Woody looks so young and Hank...well, you can scarcely recognize him.
This is kind of a poor man's Repo Man to the extent it tries to portray these two buddies as sort of counter-culture, subversive kind of cats. Complete with Edward Hopper and Sex Pistols references. But, it develops into an excellent movie with writing that is equal to, if not better than the writing of a film such as Barcelona. Very witty at times without coming off as phony.
I really wish this was on DVD. I would actually pick up a copy if it were. I enjoyed it as the movie went on and it developed into quite a good story. Try to find a copy, look for it on the IFC, or scour the used VHS bins out and about.

Great Film: Time to get it on DVD!, December 15, 2007
This review is from: Cool Blue [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Cool Blue is a gem. GREAT characters, acting, writing, editing, pacing, soundtrack... Like many others, I had never heard of it; saw it on cable by chance in 1991 and never forgot it. It's both a neat time capsule and timeless, all at once. Woody, Hank, Ely, Paul, Christopher, Phil, and --SEAN PENN (in a GREAT cameo role)-- ALL simply shine. Creatively done and lots of fun. NOTE TO Richard Shepard ("The Matador," "The Hunting Party") & Mark Mullin (writers/directors): WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET THIS CLASSIC FILM OF YOURS ON DVD AT LAST?
Thanks for making one of my favorite films... Matthew Cross
