Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is great for bosses who want to learn the secrets of being a better boss - but it's also a must-have for anyone who wants to learn some serious leadership skills. Based on the knowledge of the best cool bosses in business, Cool Boss reveals secrets about leadership and image that you've probably never even considered."

"You think you are cool? Then think again! Can's useful guide may be the wake up call you have needed. Having read another case study, MBA 2.0, from the very same visionary author, I have found his recent work splendidly complementary like the missing piece of a jigsaw."
Seren Ucyildiz, Vodafone UK

"Cool Boss takes you on a whirlwind tour behind the scenes of today's most game changing enterprises. Each chapter presents a different quality desirable in building a revolutionary modern business and inspiring a creative and committed workforce. Each characteristic is illustrated by a truly illuminating case study, each of which focuses on another of today's most famous, notorious, idolised or controversial - but most of all successful - business or political leaders. Find out what these icons do differently to pave a smooth road to success beneath their feet.

Unlike any other business book I've read, Cool Boss is un-put-down-able. At the close of each chapter, you just want to know more. Your mind is left whirling with all the ways you can put the ideas presented into practice. The book is well written in an informal and humorous style, guaranteed to keep the reader hooked to the end and provide some real inspiration."
Jade Corcoran, Savvy Sidekick

The qualities that define the careers and mentality of the cool, new generation of business leaders are specifically designed to fit within the modern world, leaving the obsolete and antiquated modes of leadership behind.

Awesome read! Cool Boss is one-of-a-kind, it is blunt, and shows that the "cool bosses" really have an advantage of the beige. It contains some seriously in-depth explorations of real world examples and case studies from some of the "coolest" business personalities alive today (like Mark Zucherberg).

I highly recommend this book. If you're looking to get ahead and want to lead in exciting and innovative ways, this book is a MUST read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great leadership advice September 5, 2013

"Cool Boss" is a helpful and fascinating look at an emerging corporate culture; where CEOs think "outside the box" and steer their companies to greater heights. Those profiled - Steve Jobs, Oprah, and Mark Zuckerberg to name a few - are people who have played a major role in changing the way we live and communicate. What Can Akdeniz has done is highlight the traits and unique styles that have helped them get to the top, and you can apply them to your own career.

My favorite profile was the first one. Jim Sinegal was the CEO of Costco and one of the reasons for his success was that he treated employees well and didn't elevate himself to a rarefied status in the company. If you shop at Costco, you can see the empolyees seem happy and enjoy their jobs. As "Cool Bosses" points out, they have the lowest turnover in retail. As anyone who has worked in retail can attest, that is quite a feat. Akdeniz shows how his non-traditional ways have played such a large part in Costco's success.

I highly recommend "Cool Boss", It's a great source of knowledge and inspiration you can use in your own career and life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely and relevant August 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Although i went into this book thinking i was a cool boss, i finished the book realizing i still have room to grow. As it turns out being cool needs to be integrated into your culture across the office, enterprise, or organization. Training folks how to meet your expectations is important but empowering individuals to be great is key to creating an environment that is conducive to netting higher productivity. I'd also concur that innovation is paramount to being cool for nearly every organization or leader....ever heard of a guy named Steve jobs? Definitely a "cool" book for the boss who's looking to change the dynamics of his/her culture with the goal of capturing better, sustainable results from your workforce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerfully life-changing August 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Can Akdeniz can leave you spellbound, but mainly because he has a way with words--he can deeply inspire just by telling stories or anecdotes. So imagine what a jaws-dropping experience it is when Akdeniz tells stories about real-life successful people--in fact, his book, `Cool Boss: Master 11 Qualities of Today's Greatest Leaders', is one shining example of Akdeniz's beguiling power--his breadth of knowledge and depth of wisdom are powerful elements that make this book utterly special.

Basically, `Cool Boss' is a book about business--or to be more specific, a book about running a business in a "cool" way, in careful consideration of the fast-changing circumstances of today's world. There is something so compelling about the way highly successful people live or do things--that's why this book can hold your attention and keep you turning the pages as if it's a suspense thriller. For example, I have always admired Richard Branson's rise from rags to riches, starting with a small store in the UK and progressing to become one of the world's most influential (yet still "cool") business magnates. His business and personal gimmicks have been a tremendous source of fascination for me--now, `Cool Boss' educates me about the fact that Branson isn't the only one who walks and talks that way--there is Zappos's Tony Hsieh, who always made it a point to find the best employees and further empower them, or SAS's Jim Goodnight, whose radical innovation in changing the structure of the workplace is so "against the grain" of common wisdom, it made me shake my head in sheer admiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended August 13, 2013

I definitely recommend Cool Boss: Why Cool Leaders Are More Successful and 11 Qualities of Today's Greatest Leaders. It was a "cool" book! Being a cool boss is not just a convenience; it's a way of thinking that influences your whole business philosophy. The 11 qualities he outlines are sensible, easy to understand, and easy to apply to your work life.
The book talks about how there is still space at the "Cool Kids' Table" in the corporate cafeteria. People generally want to be liked, so obviously bosses like to be labelled "cool." Akdinez helpfully explains not only how to do this, but how it can help your business and how it can help your company's image. He actually talks about how being a cool boss can help your bottom line! I think that was the part that surprised me.
I thought the discussion about controlling vs. enabling was enlightening. Conventional wisdom is that a controlling boss will be able to force workers to get more done, but this book explains how giving workers some breathing space can enable their creativity and motivation, leading to an overall increase in productivity.
He describes this shift as a long-term change, not a temporary trend. Thus, the book addresses the issue of how to be an effective boss in a forward-thinking manner instead of simply dwelling on business tips for this week or this year. I like how he describes the change as an end to the old guard of business and how he describes cool bosses as far-seeing innovators. I hadn't really thought of a boss's "coolness" as correlating with their innovativeness. In general, though, there were a number of things that I had thought of in a different light before reading this. It gave me an interesting new perspective on issues in the business world today.
