Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-Girls who excel in science and math will find examples of challenging and rewarding aeronautics careers here. Comprised of biographies of 10 women active in the field, the book gives insights, tricks of the trade, educational requirements, and numerous tips on success for each featured profession. An interesting variety of jobs are covered: astrophysicist, astronaut, aerospace engineer, cosmochemist, planetary and astrobiology research scientist, physicist, helicopter pilot, air traffic controller, and airline pilot. Sidebars with related historical facts, salary estimates, and interest and ability checklists round out the information. The writing style is catchy and holds interest, and the black-and-white photos of mainly white women support the text. A helpful list of recommended reading, pertinent Internet sites, and professional organizations are given at the end. Offering more background and career options, Wallace R. Maples's Opportunities in Aerospace Careers (1995) and Adrian A. Paradis's Opportunities in Airline Careers (1997, both VGM) would complement this title, even though they are not as current and address both genders.
