Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-This inspiring and realistic guide looks at 10 women successfully working in various aspects of the construction industry. The number of women in these kinds of careers is small yet growing, and the frustrations of being part of that minority are described as readily as the job highlights. The author showcases such careers as architect, electrician, plumber, ironworker, and carpenter. There is a balanced representation of women from different backgrounds, educational levels, and interests. The black-and-white photos are well integrated and add to the spirit of the text, as do bits of supplemental facts and statistics. A detailed list of training centers, trade groups, and organizations is appended. Michael Sumichrast's Opportunities in Building Construction Trades (VGM, 1998) has a straightforward format with much more descriptive information about the construction trades and in-depth coverage of education and training requirements, but it lacks the reader-friendly style found here.

From Booklist

Even in the twenty-first century, girls may still see their career options through their grandmothers' eyes: limited by gender. The Cool Careers for Girls series challenges that view by presenting nontraditional job paths and profiling interesting, appealing women who have successfully followed them. Here women in construction careers ranging from architect to ironworker are profiled, with the authors providing basic information about the job, the salary range, the daily routine, and training. Photographs show the women and their work in a positive light. It is the nature of the book that the text is occasionally repetitive, but readers will probably browse chapters rather than reading cover to cover. A detailed appendix lists organizations to contact for further information. Young women who enjoy working with their hands and their heads, and are considering a nontraditional career, will appreciate the personalized approach. No index. Catherine Andronik --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
