Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Kenney’s fourth LEGO book for children interprets the castle theme broadly. After opening with several medieval scenes showing a farm and a village on market day, he introduces the castle itself, an extensive complex that can be built in sections (keep, drawbridge, towers, walls). Readers are encouraged to combine the sections as they choose. The castle pages feature outdoor scenes dramatizing a tournament and a dragon attack, and interior scenes showing the king’s court and the dungeon. Short sentences introduce each double-page spread and provide how-to tips, such as Pieces act like hinges when they’re attached only at the ends. While certain structures look challenging, small digital illustrations offer step-by-step visual instructions. Throughout the book, clean page design enhances the clear color photos, which provide inspiration for children’s own medieval constructions and imaginative play. A fine addition to this popular series. Preschool-Grade 3. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

Praise for Cool Cars and Trucks:

“Children who love cars, trucks, and LEGO blocks will find plenty to enjoy in this colorful book. . . . This visually engaging book will attract little ones interested mainly in looking at cars and trucks, as well as older kids, who may actually follow the directions and build some of the projects.” —Booklist

Praise for Cool Robots:

“For LEGO enthusiasts, future engineers, and reluctant readers, this is a colorful and inspiring book.” —School Library Journal

“It’s fun (and potentially inspiring) to see what can be created with a little imagination, an inclination for building things, and an unlimited supply of interlocking plastic blocks and widgets.” —Booklist

Hi. I was so very excited to get this book for my son. Sadly when it arrived, i was a little dissapointed. While the binding is nice, the content is a little, well, young? I know that sounds silly, it's a book about LEGO's after all. But, i was expecting a book that was a little more technical. This is not that. The only reason why i kept it is because i have 3 boys ranging from 10 to 4....figuring they would all get something different out of it. I bought it for my 10 year old who is much more advanced than this book at LEGO building. I did a lot of research on Sean Kenney before purchasing this book. I had high hopes.

While it has a great cover that inspires thoughts of building for hours, once you get into the content, you find it totally lacking. There are no broken down instructions for the few examples of castles you can try to recreate... not much content... should be skipped.....

Sean Kenney's books are great fun. My five year old loves all his books and I can see him using them for at least a few more years.

What a great idea! - and it has sparked my son's imagination with things to do with his mountain of lego bricks that used to be part of sets that have long been pulled apart and cast into the lego bin.

My sons, ages 10 and 7, are always happy with books from Sean Kenney! It's fun for them to create in a different way using these books.

This book is cute and has great photos. I bought it looking for ideas to build my own castle but it didn't have very many photos of actual castles. Great kids book anyway!
