A Great Book - Successful in My Classroom!,

I am excited to let everyone know that this wonderful little book proved to be a hit in my classroom! I teach 3rd Grade and my students had an absolute ball performing these monologues! They are brief in length and the scenarios are very life-like and easy for the children to relate to. Give your classroom a gift and pick up this little treasure!

A Middle School Theatre Teacher's Critique,

I teach theatre to middle schoolers and bought this book as a quick fix monologue book. There are some very cute monologues, and they're easy to memorize for the most inexperienced thespian. The book is well organized, and the subject matter covered isn't heavy (which I found a relief with how much negative stimuli kids have these days), and the pages are easy to copy. However, if you're looking for really AWESOME monologues you might be disappointed. It's not Tennyson or Shakespeare (none of my students would have wanted Tennyson or Shakespeare). Overall, I would say the book serves it's purpose. Oh, and my students enjoyed their monologues.

Great Monologues for Really Young Kids,
By
This review is from: Cool Characters for Kids! 71 One-Minute Monologues, Ages 4-12 (Paperback)
I needed to buy a book of monologues for my daughter because she was participating in a workshop and needed something to memorize. I looked at quite a few books before deciding upon "Cool Characters for Kids! 71 One-Minute Monologues." I chose this one over the others because these monologues truly seemed as though they were intended for kids. They're short and you have the choice between dramatic and comedy. My daughter does not read yet, so it's not like she's going to memorize two pages from a classic play and be comfortable with the material. These monologues are contemporary and their concepts are easy to grasp which makes the memorization of it painless. I think it's a great introduction for young children and would definitely recommend the book.

Great selection, wide age range.,

My students loved the material and had a blast performing the monologues for parents and friends. The audience responded with laughter, maybe even a few tears. Terrific options for ages 6 through middle school. As an actor, I was pleased to find quality material, with a contemporary feel, for my kids to work on. Great source for auditions.

Awesome Monologue Book!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cool Characters for Kids! 71 One-Minute Monologues, Ages 4-12 (Paperback)
Great Book! My daughter started taking acting classes since Jan 2006. Where we lived Maui, Hawaii we didn't find any good monologue for kids but was advised to order online. The day we got the book my daughter started going through the monologue, she loves it. Her workshop teacher asked her to bring her book to class so everyone can use it. Because she likes this book so much, she is now looking forward for her class.

Just what I was looking for!,
By Drama Mama (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cool Characters for Kids! 71 One-Minute Monologues, Ages 4-12 (Paperback)
This book is very well organized and it has both comic and dramatic monologues for boys and girls. My students were able to learn the material fairly quickly as the monologues are one-minute (and some are shorter for the younger kids). They really have fun performing them because they can relate to them and I feel it is essential that acting students enjoy themselves in order for them to want to learn more and move into classical text. This book gets an A+ from me and my students! I highly recommend it!

Just So-So,

I bought this book to use as a resource in a drama class that I teach. In my class I usually have students pick a monologue at the beginning of the year and then improve on their performance of it as we go, finally performing it at the annual recital. I was looking for some new material. This book is just okay. A few of the monologues are good, most are just so-so and none are really fantastic. My biggest problem with most of them is that there seems to be very little room for character building. Also, most of them are based on situations which are somewhat cliche. I was hoping for something with more depth and a bit more interesting. Not a total waste of money, but I probably could have found something better.

Not good for auditions,

I was hoping this would be a good resource for audition material for my daughter, but most directors want actual monologues from published plays. These are all original pieces that would probably be better for use in a public speaking class or something along those lines. They are cute and interesting, though... just not the best for an open-call audition.

Topics include alcohol theme - not good for litte kids,

My daughter memorized one of the monologues and it discussed a child who was going to "spike the punch" at a party. If the editor recommends this book for grade school then these topics are best excluded from the book. They don't add anything clever and only serve to alienate certain buyers.
