Editorial Reviews

Everyone in Nashville is pondering the ramifications (if any) of O Brother's success. While it's a long shot that pre-bluegrass acoustic country will pull a bloodless coup, this Idaho native may have the answer. Her mystical-sounding name comes from an Ingrid Bergman film, yet there's nary a hint of artifice in this near-flawless mélange of rootsy, neo-traditional fare. She possesses a smoky, passionate voice with overtones of Bonnie Raitt and Shelby Lynne. Few contemporary singers could match her rhythmic instincts as she masters straight-shooting songs from Kieran Kane ("Cool Me Down") and Jamie O'Hara ("Be a Woman"). True, "It Won't Be Me" is an obvious sop to the power-ballad crowd, yet everything else is tough and nimble. Both the infectious "South Side Stomp" and "Papa Don't Ask, Mama Don't Know" reflect a total mastery of Western swing. "Little Unlucky at Love" thrives in an austere yet contemporary arrangement. Using the same no-frills approach he applied to the Judds, producer Brent Maher played to Jenai's strengths, resulting in a stunning, charismatic debut. --Rich Kienzle

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNNY NAME, GREAT CD, March 20, 2003
This review is from: Cool Me Down (Audio CD)
Jenai reminds me of the early Shelby Lynne, who used her smoky voice to transcend "country" and "blues", and mold her own sultry style. Jenai, likewise, uses this quality to infuse her songs with seductive allure. "Cool Me Down" is a CD highlighted by great vocals, tight (yet sparse) instrumentation and an upbeat, let's have fun motif. Her reworking of Lynne's "A Little Unlucky at Love" is marvelous. "Southside Stomp" is also fun and highly listenable.
The whole set cooks; let's just hope country music stations give her the airplay she deserves!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun, February 22, 2003
This review is from: Cool Me Down (Audio CD)

I bought this CD after seeing the video for "Southside Stomp". Jenai is truly a refreshing new sound.

Most of the songs are upbeat (I subtracted a star because the CD could use a couple more changes of pace). The standouts are "Southside Stomp", the Texas-swinger "Papa Don't Ask, Mama Don't Know" and the mellow, blues-y "It Won't be Me". "Loraine" is about that 'fast' girl everyone knows and is a toe-tapping song with a great drumbeat. I listen to this CD a lot at work, it makes the time go by quickly and is just a lot of fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars a different sound, May 7, 2002
This review is from: Cool Me Down (Audio CD)
The best way to describe this is Shania Twain singing traditional songs. Very energetic music. Not over-produced by any means. Awesome voice.
