4.0 out of 5 stars I love this name book, but they quickly become dated
Here is the deal: If you want a list of names with meanings and origins, KEEP LOOKING. THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR YOU! Rather, tihis book trys to put its finger on the pulse of what a cool name is. As a person who was given the trendiest name of my generation I wanted something else for my own children. The books they write do a pretty good job of spotting trends, but now...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for writers; not for parents-to-be
I'm a writer, so I'm always on the lookout for interesting names I might use for some characters. I have about three people named Scott, five James's (all men), and a good three or four girls with the name Elizabeth. So I picked this up, thinking it might help me. There are some good ideas for character names in here (Narcissa, Dashiell, and Isolde), but I don't think...

The books they write do a pretty good job of spotting trends, but now that the trends are changing so fast it is getting harder for them to keep up. Granted, this also allows them to keep writing and selling books! Remember also that this book is a collection of 2 women's opinions, which you may or may not agree with. I agree with them most of the time so I find the books helpful and entertaining.

When you are tryiing to come up with a name for your baby, it was more important to me know how popular it is and how it may be perceived than it is of welsh origin and means "white wave"- I am sure that did not come at all into play to the millions of moms that named their daughters Jennifer in the 70's and 80's. They just liked the way it sounded and their favorite movie may have been "Love Story". This book is for people who want some ideas on what other people are doing, and then they can follow the trend, or buck it, as they choose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for people who are internet savvy, August 24, 2005
This review is from: Cool Names for Babies (Paperback)
I love this book! I'm one of those people who want a unique name for my child and this book is laid out in a very different way than the other books I have. The other reviewers are correct in that there are no meanings given, but anyone with an internet connection can look up the names themselves. I also have one of those thick 30,000 best world names books and prefer this smaller one. If you are looking for unique names and a little entertainment, this book is great. It's a small book, so don't expect to just buy this book as you search for your baby's name.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE these books!, January 17, 2007
This review is from: Cool Names for Babies (Paperback)
I adore the books these authors write; they are my soulmates! I have been interested in names ever since I was a child, and their books totally feed my craving. I love their insightful and intelligent advice, I love their humor, and I love lists! I love knowing WHY people (and celebrities) named their child what they did. Knowing trends is very important to me; I would never want my child to be one of 5 of the same name in her class as I was with "Susan". These books have their finger on the pulse, and also give lots of alternative suggestions to popular names. I love their "So Far Out They're In" type categories. This book is a total winner, and very entertaining, unlike those "encyclopedias" of name meanings. I always lend mine to prospective mothers, and keep an extra copy just for that purpose.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for writers; not for parents-to-be, January 13, 2007

I'm a writer, so I'm always on the lookout for interesting names I might use for some characters. I have about three people named Scott, five James's (all men), and a good three or four girls with the name Elizabeth. So I picked this up, thinking it might help me. There are some good ideas for character names in here (Narcissa, Dashiell, and Isolde), but I don't think it's a good idea to just smush a name together for a real person (who in their right mind would name their kid Moon?). Plus, it also promotes giving kids crappy names. What really made the star-rating go down for me was their section on grandpa/granddaughter names. It's offensive that they say names like Marshall, Stanley, Wallace, Gary, Randolph, Theodore, and Sherman shouldn't be used on a boy. It's okay to name a girl Marshall, though! After all, a girl obviously is stronger with a male name! "Rolls eyes". Bull. Giving a girl a name like Wallace or Stanley is nothing short of cruel. These are boy names and should stay that way. The same goes for Elliot. And also, a lot of these names aren't new. The -aden trend is already dated; there are so many Brayden/Caden/Jaydens nowadays. I gave it two stars because I found some good ideas in here for CHARACTERS or PETS! But it's only two because it's also suggesting that it's okay to give your kid a crappy name (or should I say, krappeigh, since creative spelling is where it's at nowadays).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Name Book!, July 21, 2004
By
This review is from: Cool Names for Babies (Paperback)
This book is great. It gives you the list of today's top 100 names, as well as tossing out some lesser known ones from other parts of the world, and names that haven't been in the mainstream for decades. Great book if you want a different name for your baby without it being too out there or borderlining trashy. We got our baby's name from this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SOURCE OF FRESH IDEAS, January 21, 2004

If you're looking for conventional info like the derivation and literal meaning of a name, you won't find it here, but what you will find is a great supply of innovative ideas not to be found anywhere else. One section I particularly liked was the foreign word names--such as Vrai and Aquila. Recommended to anyone in the process of seeking a name and also a very cool shower gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars PUTS THE FUN INTO PREGNANCY!, December 31, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Cool Names for Babies (Paperback)
My DH and I are having so much fun with this book. Okay, maybe we're not going to name the baby Maso or Yancey, but we're having lots of laughs at all the way-out suggestions and also getting tons of ideas we definitely would not have thought of any other way. Plus it seems that so many of my friends have given their babies names like Kaley and Caden and then been so surprised to find out that everybody else had those names --- with this book I know I'm going to find a name that's truly "different." Thank you, Cool Names, for making being pregnant a whole lot more fun and for giving us such great ideas too!!

My husband and I are expecting our third child at the end of this year and were just plain tired of all of the usual baby name books.

So, I bought this one. Not only has it given us some inspiration and sent us in directions we would not have gone otherwise, it has also given us some much needed laughter.

There are a million name books out there with the same old irrelevant information -- this one is lively and fun and offers something that NO other book provides! A good way to start the fun part of parenting asap. I LOVED this book.
