5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Davis, The 80's Phil Spector, September 12, 2003

Go past his pop hits...."Cool Night" "'65 Love Affair" "Do Right"
"Ride "em Cowboy", "Superstar" etc.... You will find a great, no, ...wonderful....no, words can not describe this man's production work, skills, writing, arrangements. Give a real close listen to " '65 Love Affair", hear all of HIS overlay tracking, his genius skills of production of so many voices and instruments! Listen to "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely", Man what a musical high! His "third eye" is so skilled in music presentation
Phil Spector would smile and dig it! In my opinion, Paul Davis is one of the all time best in pop music history! GOD BLESS him!
Thank you Paul for the years of enjoyment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Please Come Back!! :(, May 22, 2003

This review is from: Cool Night (Audio CD)
One of the greatest voices to come out of pop music from any genre. His smoothness comes across as effortlessly as water poured from a glass. Cool Night is one of the songs that made me become a musician and singer. A must for anyone who loves music of love, family, faith and growing up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Album, April 23, 2008
This review is from: Cool Night (Audio CD)
I am writing this review in memory of Paul Davis, who passed away of a heart attack on April 22, 2008. I had this album for a great many years, and always enjoyed it. My favorite song of his was "'65 Love Affair" with "Cool Night" as my 2d favorite, and my 3d favorite "Somebody's Been Getting To You." He had a very wonderful voice and talent, and he will be greatly missed by his fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars cool night, April 17, 2007
This review is from: Cool Night (Audio CD)
This is one of the coolest out there. It still brings back a flood of memories from that era. I bought the cassette when it first came out and I loved it then and I still love it now. His voice is awesome. It is just one of a kind you could listen to it over and over and never get tired of it. If you have never heard it you should get it and listen I'm sure you'll love it as I have. Can't go wrong with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Song Crooning in One of its Better Incarnations!, February 18, 2009
I remember as a boy really enjoying listening to "Cool Night" and "65 Love Affair" and indeed it was really for these 2 tracks that I got this effectively best of album of Paul Davis. The other tracks here are not fillers but certainly are not as good as those two tracks. Paul's music falls into that same genre that was very popular in the early 80s to which also belong the likes of Robbie Dupree, John O'Banion and Jim Photoglo and if you like these guys' work, you will also love this album. The whole album is a great representation of the soft, mellow love song genre and the sound quality is good having been remastered well. I had the previous Japanese release and I can tell you the sound quality has really improved a great deal in this mini-lp replica sleeve (mlps) version. Also included is a 20-page booklet containing all the lyrics in both English and Japanese. Too bad the cardboard sleeve is poorly designed and constructed though from very thin cardboard that looks like it will come apart soon once the glue gets old. The album cover though is the original U.S. release lp (Paul laid back with his hands behind his head for support) one although they do include a square glossy sheet of the Japanese release front cover which is what is displayed on this site.

Poor mlps design but good remastering job for a much improved sound over the original cd release. A great album to get for all the lovers and romantics out there a.k.a. the "chick flick" of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Davis at his best, November 15, 2003

It's just unbelievable that Paul Davis is not far better known. Cool Night is one of the best pop albums from the early eights. Paul's music is rich and his talent shines through in every song. For eights pop fans that know of him, this is a must have, and for those who don't, get this album any way you can, you have no idea what your missing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Blessed Voice!!, April 14, 2007

Paul Davis's voice is very melodic, sweet and gentle. To me he's number 1. Of all the songs he wrote in his Cd Sweet Life, my favorite all time song is, Cool Night, the second one is I Go Crazy and of course, You Got to Do Right. I bought 2 Sweet Life CDs in case something happen to one. Plus I recorded it, in my computer. I recomend this Cd to Everybody!

As a song writer is very very good. You can see his beautiful heart, through the lyrics he writes. He's blessed of God.

It's a true shame I have never seeing him on tv singing, or sharing in a Talk Show. I guess the Lord is leading him through another path, which's even better. No doubt he's a very private man, according to what I read about him.

To me there is no other Singer! Please Paul, show up again on TV so that We can see you!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Davis-An Underrated Talent, April 7, 2010
This review is from: Cool Night (Audio CD)
Much as was true with the disco era the fact that the "soft rock" genre not only ended up often being an easy dumping ground for artists very difficult to classify (such as Gino Vannelli and Hall & Oates) but also too easily obscured many talented people, those two individuals included. Paul Davis was another such case. A fairly obscure 70's southern pop/rock styled artist with a lot of potential as an all around talent this, what turned out to be his final album really cements his talents as an expressive vocalist, clever producer, masterful keyboardist possesed of a sense of melody and romantic, swoony soulfullness not too out of sync with the likes of (yes) Hall And Oates and Todd Rundgren. One thing he always focuses on however is an extremely keen pop sensability and,due to the lack of success of many of his previous albums that's what he does here. The main reason this is usually catagorized as soft rock is that there are little to no loud guitars or wailing vocals here to qualify it as even conventional pop/rock. It's more an 80's adaptation of singer-songwriter pop with Brill building influences. What really makes this album so special is how Davis really reinvented himself as a completely contemporary artist for this period with excellent use of multi layered, harmonically involved electric keyboards and a band of multiple guitar players, bassists, drummers and backup singers to create music that is very much involved in the arrangement. Anyone whose listened to pop radio within the last 30 years will all to easily recognize the title tune of this album. It's a well done tune for sure but the big surprise is that it's not the best song on this album. All ten songs on this album are actually superb and,for a record of it's era I'm happy to say at least for me I can pop this album along, listen to it from beginning to end without skipping over any songs. Some personal favorites, although this album is composed primarily of uptempo tunes are the rock/soul breakdowns of the snappy, crisp "Nathan Jones" and "65 Love Affair",a song that anticipates in many ways some of the melodic ideas Toto would use on their huge hit Rosanna a year after this. The same soft soul quality lends itself equally well to the modernized cover of the Friends Of Distinction's "Love Me Or Let Me Be Lonley" as well as the closing two songs "What You Got To Say About Love" and "We're Still Together". His ammusing lyrical wordplay also occasionally calls to mind Smokey Robinson and such and does him a good service in the area. "Oriental Eyes","You Came To Me" and "Somebody's Gettin' To You" showcase more delicacy and moodiness into three awkwardly romantic themed "story" songs that essentially keep the same flavors intact. This album is very much it's own masterpiece of melody, lite blue eyed soul and musical consistancy and if your a lover of very high quality early 80's pop music, especially stretched out across an entire album this album is something you should explore. It's regrettable that Davis is no longer with us but at the same time Wounded Bird has this wonderful album out again to allow newcomers and old fans alike to appreciate his somewhat unsung pop artistry.
