Editorial Reviews

Review

Cool Down and Work Through Anger is an excellent book for helping children understand this unpleasant but normal emotion. The book takes an evidence-based approach which is recommended in the early childhood field. When their teacher reads this book, children will learn that feeling angry is perfectly normal but that hurting somebody because you are angry is not acceptable. The book gives very helpful strategies for helping children deal with anger.”
—Marian Marion, Ph.D., Professor, Early Childhood Education, Governors State University

“A delightful addition to the series. I particularly like the focus on what kids can do to handle their anger more constructively, rather than focusing on what not to do. . . . Will appeal to kids as well as those who work with them.”
—James J. Crist, Ph.D., author of What to Do When You’re Scared and Worried and Mad

Cool Down and Work Through Anger is an excellent anger-management toolbox written at reading level 1–2 for kids ages 4–8. Full-color illustrations provide examples of kids experiencing anger management problems and solutions. Cool Down and Work Through Anger is very accessible and kid-friendly without talking down to kids. Its simple, direct language provides real models of better ways to interact and deal with anger. Cool Down and Work Through Anger is a paperback book that includes an activity guide for adults with specific suggestions for ways to reinforce helpful ideas and also a number of suggested games and activities to resolve anger. There are a lot of reasons we can get angry. It's how we deal with it that makes the difference. Cool Down and Work Through Anger is a fantastic book that shows kids that it's normal to get angry. It begins with a few scenarios that might cause a kid to be angry - being left out of a play group, being treated with disrespect. Then it talks about the physical feeling of being angry - hot face, tense muscles, fast heartbeat. It talks about what you might want to do if you get angry, but then explains that these are not always the best choices. Finally, it gives some very helpful advice on what to do if you are feeling angry. The illustrations really do a great job in explaining what is going on in the book. Even if a child can't read, they can understand the book's message.

As a parent, I really like the last part of the book - the discussion questions and activities. It breaks down the book by pages and gives questions to talk about with your kids like, "When is a time you felt angry?" and "When is a time you said 'I'm sorry?' How did it feel afterward?" There are also some wonderful cool-down activities kids can try when they are angry. I think the advice is also great for adults. I highly recommend this book.

I purchased this book in an effort to help my four year old deal with his bursts of anger. I think the story is great and really provides you with a context to start a dialouge with your child. There isn't any new or mindblowing idea, just take a deep breath and count to ten, but something about reading it aloud and going through it together is very inspiring.

Also the illustrations are great. I've never seen emotions so perfectly reflected in drawings of children.

I think this is a great book to help you talk with your child about controlling difficult emotions.

I got this for my 6 year old who was having difficulties expressing her anger. This book lets the child know what they should do when they are angry (talk to an adult, cool off ect.) and makes the child aware that their actions can affect others around them. The book takes the child through several short stories of different children and how they express themselves.

I would definitely recommend this book to any educator or parent of a young child. The wording and pictures are very accessible to a younger audience. I really appreciated the extra activities and discussion starters at the end of the book.

Our family owns several of the books in this series. I picked some up while teaching preschool, and found that my toddler loved them, too- he's nearly five now, and Cool Down and Work Through Anger is our most recent acquisition in the series. He gives each book in the series rapt attention, and this one was no different. I highly recommend it for classroom and home teaching! This addresses the same issues as Hands are Not for Hitting, in a more advanced but easy-to-understand way, giving kids tools to deal with feelings on their own level.
